NEW SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGIES
Classrooms
Classroom A-110 – During the month of February 2008, we completed an upgrade of the multimedia equipment in this room. The new components include two microphones, the networked faculty computer, a document camera and a DVD/VHS player. All of the new equipment interfaces with the data projector mounted on the ceiling. We programmed the touch panel for control of the equipment, giving increased consistency and ease of use among our classrooms.
Seminar Room A-110A – During the break between the Fall and Spring semesters, we installed multimedia equipment in A-110A. The room now contains a control box that opens, providing access to a DVD/VHS player and a connection for a laptop computer. This equipment connects to the new ceiling-mounted data projector, with a switch control for a new drop down screen. This is our first implementation of permanently placed technology equipment in a seminar room. If the design proves to be effective, we will use it as a prototype for technology upgrades in several small classrooms this summer. If you have the opportunity to use the new equipment in A-110A, please share your thoughts with us. You can send your comments to Ellen Greenfield and Michelle Odell.
Automated Podcasting/Webcating Equipment – During the Fall semester, we installed Apreso/Echo 360 stations in classrooms F-108, F-109 and F-209. This technology automates the process of capturing video, audio and PowerPoint during a lecture, and facilitates the process of publishing the content on the web for students to download and/or play back. We expect to install Apreso stations in A-110 and F-200 during the Spring. If you would like information on the use of this new equipment, please contact Michelle Odell.
Personal Response System – The personal response systems, or PRS, allow students to answer a question posed in class by the instructor using a small remote control. The data can immediately be sorted into pie charts and graphs and displayed. The voting can be anonymous or each remote can be registered to a student’s ID number, so that scores can be recorded. Other applications for PRS include taking attendance, class participation, quizzes and homework. We have the e-Instruction PRS software and 100 student remotes for use in F-108. If you would like more information about the use of PRS, please contact Michelle Odell.
Student Computing
Improved Audio/Video Streaming on Student Computers – In August 2007, we upgraded the management system that delivers individual students’ computer desktop settings to any of our student computers. The upgraded system greatly facilitates the presentation of streaming audio and video files on our student computers.
Coming Soon – New Student Computers! – We will replace and upgrade the computers located in the computer labs and classrooms, library carrels, law review offices and student organization offices during the summer. With increasingly heavy use of wireless networking for laptop computing and printing, students may find their use of our standard desktop computers changing. We would very much appreciate hearing your views about your evolving needs for computing resources at the Law School. If you would like to comment, please see our Service Desk staff in C-118 in the Law Library or email us at help@law.miami.edu.
