Multimedia Technology Classrooms

The Information Technology department provides multimedia support for classes and events. Multimedia equipment is installed in most classrooms as well as the Faculty Meeting Room and the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge. Virtually all of the classrooms have a computer with network access to networked files, a laptop connection, and at least one data projector. Request Form Policies

We require one week notice for weekday events/classes and two weeks notice for weekend events/classes. We will try to accommodate last minute requests if equipment and staff are available. E-mail sent to av@law.miami.edu is our preferred method when requesting equipment and labor services. You may also use the Online Request Form, or call us with questions. Disc duplications, file conversions and webcasting projects take up to two weeks to complete. It is our policy that equipment is for on campus use only. We offer limited A/V and labor support for off campus events. You may borrow equipment once you have signed an agreement that you have read our policies on borrowing equipment.

Classroom Orientations

Get help inside a classroom with microphones and sound systems, laptop and desktop computers, data projectors, document cameras, and multimedia podiums. If the equipment is installed in the room, we can provide a tutorial on how it operates. If the room doesn't have what you need, we can supplement it with portable equipment. The University has a wireless network called Wireless Canes. Upon request, the A/V department can set up a laptop with wireless internet access.

Event Production

We produce the equipment you need for your event. To request audio visual assistance for event production, please reserve the appropriate room and select the services request under the A/V section within the online classroom reservation system. Please include an explanation of your desired outcome for your event, and we will translate that request into equipment and labor required for a successful event.

Video and Audio Recordings

Faculty members may request to have their class recorded onto DVD and other digital formats or have the class recorded onto an audio CD. DVDs and CDs can be checked out by the students from the Circulation Desk, or a media file can be posted to the UM School of Law website.

Simulcasting

For events with a large attendance, the audio and video of the presenter can be sent (simulcasted) live to another room within the School of Law. This is used primarily by Bar-Bri during the summer session.

Disc Duplication and File Conversions

You can have copies of CDs and DVDs made. VHS tapes can be converted to DVD, and DVDs and miniDV tapes can be converted to various streaming file formats.

Webcasting and Podcasting

A streaming file, or webcast, allows you to begin playing the media file without having to download it first. Streaming files are more secure in that you cannot download the file and have a copy of it. Connection speed and traffic on the internet can affect the quality of playback. A video may pause to buffer, or the video portion may freeze while the audio plays continuously. A podcast, on the other hand, does require that you download the audio or video file in its entirety before you begin playback. You copy the file to a portable device, like an iPod. Downloaded files do not need to buffer, therefore your playback experience should be smoother, especially if you have a slower connection to the internet.

Requesting a Class or Event Be Recorded/Posted Online

To request webcasting and podcasting, please e-mail av@law.miami.edu to request videotaping of your class or event, and that you would like to webcast or podcast. Please include a description of your event, including the names of the professor or moderator and guests, date, and topic of discussion. The turnaround time for this service is varies based on the project and can be up to 14 days. Streaming media files including various streaming file formats can also be posted to the UM School of Law website. If you wish to have your class or event posted to a specific page on the law school website, then please contact the Communications department at webupdates@law.miami.edu the same time you request services from A/V. When the video has been encoded, both you and Communications will be notified that the file is ready for posting on our website. When the file has been posted, you will receive a notification of the URL link from Communications. Audio Conferencing

Invite a presenter in a remote location to participate in your class or event. A telephone call by which a caller can speak with several people at the same time can be made with our conference phone. Two microphones capture the speakers in the conference room, while the audio of your caller can be piped in through the room's sound system.

Video Conferencing

Polycom is a manufacturer of a mobile video conferencing unit that is capable of sending audio and video signals over existing telecommunication lines. It allows for document sharing; all sites can see and discuss a presentation or website in real time. This tool is intended to enhance communication and collaboration. Possible applications include conducting interviews, co-teaching, teaching a class from a remote location, inviting a guest lecturer located in a different city to speak to your class, or attending a committee meeting when you cannot travel to the meeting site. The School of Law also utilizes services such as Skype and Adobe Connect for video conferencing.

iClicker

iClickers, allow students to vote or answer a question posed by the professor with a small remote control. The data can be analyzed and sorted into pie charts and graphs and displayed. If you would like more information, please contact Astrid Bradley at abradley@law.miami.edu.
