The University of Miami School of Law and Young ICCA are pleased to announce that a competition is now open for a full-tuition scholarship available to be awarded to a top Young ICCA member to attend the University of Miami's one-year postgraduate LLM program in international arbitration.

Process

For this competition, candidates must submit an online application* with $50 application fee for the LL.M. program. They must also submit the following documents to intl-llm@law.miami.edu by Wednesday, May 1, 2013:

  • TOEFL score (minimum of 92)
  • personal statement*
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • official transcripts
  • copy of diploma
  • resume
  • a written essay of no more than 6000 words. The essay should also include an executive summary of no more than 500 words. Topics include:
    • Is the rise of third party funding a positive or negative development for international arbitration?
    • How should the customary international standard of necessity relate to the notion of necessity as invoked in investment arbitration disputes?
    • Is admitting mass claims reconcilable with the nationality requirement of BITs?
    • May tribunals disregard preconditions to arbitration?
    • Is investor-state arbitration an appropriate way to deal with alleged interference by state courts with the enforcement of commercial arbitration awards?

Guest Lecture - Guillermo Aguilar Alvarez

Guillermo Aguilar-AlvarezLeading international arbitration attorney, Guillermo Aguilar-Alvarez, will deliver a guest lecture as part of the New York Convention course. He is a partner in King & Spalding's International Arbitration Group and has participated as arbitrator or counsel in more than 175 commercial, investment and State-to-State arbitration proceedings. Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez served as Principal Legal Counsel for the government of Mexico for the negotiation and implementation of the North American Free Trade (NAFTA) and free trade agreements with Costa Rica, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela. Previously, Mr. Aguilar-Alvarez was Counsel and General Counsel of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.
