In our U.S. and Transnational Law for Foreign Lawyers specialization, we welcome attorneys from all over the world to join us to continue the study of law in a context that emphasizes American common law and its impact in the global economy. This one-year program is ideal if you:
In the program, students also engage in a comparative study of the U.S. legal system with that of the region where they earned their law degree and those of their classmates and colleagues. Click here to view a list of courses in the program.
Each student has a different goal, whether it is returning home or remaining in the U.S. to practice law. For this reason, the program is tailored made on an individual basis depending on your interest and career goals. Only two courses are required: Introduction to U.S. Law and Legal Research and Writing. You choose your remaining courses together with the Program Director who serves as your Academic Advisor throughout your LL.M. study. Great time is taken to arrive at the best possible program for you. As a foreign attorney your background, as well as your future goals are considered.
In addition, a Master of Laws allows foreign trained attorneys to sit for the Bar Exam in several states, the most common being New York. With the New York Bar, students can practice Federal Law in any of the 50 states and serve as Corporate Counsel within a corporation.
Further, the University of Miami School of Law is one of the few law schools in the United States which offers the opportunity to transfer to the J.D. program. The transfer between both programs is open to any LL.M. student who compiles a strong record in the LL.M. coursework, and fulfills the law school’s requirements.
