Rules of court control the operation of the court and the conduct of the litigants appearing before it. They relate to such matters as the issuance of complaints, assignments of cases, method of appeal, and the proper method of making motions which are required during the many phases of a court proceeding. The following is not an exhaustive list of material available in this library on federal rules of court. Consult the subject section of the Barron's Terminal under the name of the rules you are interested in. To locate additional titles, search Baron.

Both Unannotated and Annotated resources are listed in this research guide. After the promulgation of rules, litigation is frequently passed concerning the meaning of the rules and their applicability to specific fact situations. When involved in research on federal procedure, one must often locate court decisions and other sources which interpret the rules. Annotated sets will contain these additional materials, while unannotated sets will contain only the rules as promulgated.

 Rule of General Applicability

The U.S. Supreme Court has the authority to issue rules for all federal courts. Pursuant to this authority, the Supreme Court has promulgated rules of criminal and civil procedure for use in the federal district courts and rules pertaining to proceedings in matters of bankruptcy, admiralty, and copyright. It is usually at the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Courts that proposed amendments are made to federal court rules. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts provides a wide range of administrative, legal, financial, management, program, and information technology services to the federal courts.
