The HOPE Public Interest Resource Center and the Career Planning Center at the University of Miami School of Law convened a panel of distinguished attorneys to explore current issues in Employment Discrimination law.  The panel was comprised of Commissioner Stuart Ishimaru ( Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), Mark Zelek (Managing Partner of Morgan Lewis' Miami office ), Alyse Bass (Senior Litigation Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division) and Mark Cheskin (Chair of the Florida Labor & Employment practice group at Hogan & Hartson).  The guest speakers discussed their work in the field of Employment Law and addressed various pending issues in Employment Discrimination law , including the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Ledbetter. Students had an opportunity to gain from the perspectives of the panelists who represented both governmental approaches to ending discrimination and private sector efforts to address  discrimination. Commissioner Stuart Ishimaru urged students to follow their passions to find a career after law school. He reminded students to that salary is only part of the equation – finding meaningful work that you believe in is critical to success. Alyse Bass of the DOJ advised students to keep applying if working with the DOJ as a goal. She shared her success at obtaining a position working on the ADA and how she dedicated herself to becoming an expert in the field. Mitch Kominsky, 2L student and HOPE volunteer, planned the presentation and CLE with the support of the Career Planning Center and the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center.
