Shana Schoem will be traveling to Los Angeles, California during the summer of 2009 to intern with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. The ACLU is well known for being at the forefront of civil rights and first amendment protection cases in the United States. During the summer of 2009, Shana will be exposed to a wide variety of legal claims including the topics of immigration, racial and gender discrimination, LGBTQ rights and prison reform through research, working closely with attorneys and observing in the courtroom. As recipient of a HOPE Fellowship, Shana will be looking into the similarities in the issues that are handled by the ACLU in California and the ACLU in Florida. Shana has always wanted to become involved with the ACLU and is thrilled at the opportunity to be engaged in challenging legal work during the summer of 2009.
