Jeff Hegewald, a dedicated advocate and Miami Scholar, will take his passion for service to the environment during the summer of 2009, thanks to the American Bar Association and Florida Bar Environmental Law Section. As one of two students selected as a 2009 Diversity Fellow in Environmental Law, Jeff will be working with Friends of Perdido Bay (FPB) during the summer of 2009.

In addition, Jeff will work with Marcy LaHart, adjunct professor and animal law attorney, in preparing to represent the FPB in a challenge to a delegated pollution permit that allows International Paper to dump effluent into Perdido Bay near Pensacola. Jeff will also be assisting Professor Mary Doyle author a paper about the lack of oversight of Everglades restoration during the Bush Administration. “HOPE alerted me to the existence of the fellowship that will allow me to work for an agency and non-profit group that would have otherwise struggled to support a summer clerk.”

Jeff continued, “The fellowship is a great opportunity for me to explore my interests through a full-time10 week program. HOPE did an excellent job of providing me with information about the fellowship and encouraging me to apply.”
