2008 HOPE Day of Service

During the 2008 HOPE Day of Service on August 11th, over 1,370 hours were spent brightening the lives of individuals in the Miami-Dade community. Participants were divided into teams and led by returning students serving as site leaders. The teams volunteered at various locations across Miami-Dade County spreading good will and providing hands-on assistance. Volunteers spent the morning helping with voter registration drives at FANM and Centro Campesino; interacting with sick, injured and orphaned animals at Pelican Harbor Seabird Station; assisting with environmental restoration at Miami River Commission, Shake-A-Leg, Bill Baggs Cape State Park, Virginia Key Beach and Barnacle State Historic Park; serving meals to the homeless at Camillus House; mentoring at-risk teenage boys at BayPoint Academy; working with children that have developmental disabilities at Good HOPE Equestrian Center; sorting clothes at Neat Stuff for children in foster care and shelters; and engaging in activities with children and beautifying the site at Community Partnership for the Homeless. The students all checked in and gathered to hear remarks from Dean Lennon, Assistant Dean for Public Interest and Pro Bono, who founded the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center in 1998, before heading off to their respective community partners. Site leader Jennifer Safstrom said, “It was an incredible opportunity for students to get together and provide direct service to agencies and communities in need.”
