When asked why law students should get involved with public interest service, Library Assistant Sue Ann Campbell emphatically replied, “You can either help people now when they need you, or you can become a public defender to defend them when they have turned to crime to meet their needs”.

As President of both the South Miami Dade District Council and of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Conference of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Mrs. Campbell handles much responsibility outside of her position at the University of Miami School of Law library. Actively involved with the daily work of the Society, she strives to ensure that those who need help receive it.

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul endeavors to aid those in our community who have demonstrated a genuine need for assistance. The organization was founded by French lawyer Frederick Ozanam in 1833 with the goal of alleviating the difficulties of poverty at the deepest reaches of Parisian slums. Since then, the mission of St. Vincent De Paul has carried on at an international scale.

Some of the activities of the organization include feeding the hungry, assisting in providing shelter, and helping people find jobs to help promote their economic sustainability. Mrs. Campbell’s specific branch of the regional society holds nonperishable food in pantries for the hungry. The Society oftentimes will assist in the paying of rent and of simple utilities to help those in need get by. Though it is officially a Catholic organization, more non-Catholics are aided by the Society’s efforts.

Mrs. Campbell’s life has been impacted in multiple ways by her relentless dedication to the Society. When asked about her desire to participate in community service early on in her life, she responded “I always thought there has been a disparity from the haves and the have nots”. Through her work, Sue is helping to alleviate the hardships of need in the poverty stricken City of Miami and the South Florida area. She states with conviction that “Everyone has dignity and should be treated with respect.” Her dedication to the Society is noble and the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center commends her for her spirit and commitment to serving others.
