José M. de Areilza is Secretary General of Aspen Institute España, a partner institution of The Aspen Institute in the U.S., and Professor of Law at ESADE, Ramón Llull University, Barcelona, where he holds the Jean Monnet Chair, granted by the European Commission.
José M. de Areilza was admitted in 1991 to the New York Bar. Between 1996 and 2000 he served as Advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on European and North American affairs. In 2002 he was Advisor to the Spanish Government Representative in the Convention on the Future of Europe that drafted the European Constitution. In 2007 he was appointed Member of the Board of Governors of the Madrid Bar Association. Between 2008 and 2012 he was Professor of Law, Jean Monnet Chair and founding Dean of IE Law School at IE Business School, Madrid.
He has been a Visiting Professor in National University of Singapore Faculty of Law, Getulio Vargas Direito Sao Paulo, the College of Europe Warsaw and William and Mary School of Law, Virginia.
He is the author of a weekly column on international affairs in the national newspaper ABC and is a Member of its Board of Directors. In 2013 he became a Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and was appointed Senior Research Fellow at Elcano Royal Institute. Since 2015 he is a Trustee of the Spanish Navy Museum.
He has written extensively about European Union political institutions, decision-making and constitutional issues. In 2014 he published the book Law and Power in the European Union (Civitas).
At Miami Law Professor Areilza teaches the course “Law and Power in the European Union.”
