James Peters directs product development strategies and manages regulatory compliance related to new legal services offerings as the Vice President of New Market Initiatives for LegalZoom. In his 11 years with LegalZoom, he has been responsible for a wide variety of strategic initiatives ranging from bringing specific offerings in-house via acquisition to developing offerings that provide access to third party attorneys to international expansion.
He ensures that regulatory requirements are met regarding LegalZoom’s expansion into new markets while maintaining the business goals of those initiatives. This requires broad awareness around issues such as attorney advertising, multi-jurisdictional practice and virtual practice as well as deeper knowledge in areas such as limited scope legal services, unauthorized practice of law, prepaid legal service regulations and deep expertise in the competitive landscape for online legal services.
Peters has served as an adjunct professor at Michigan State University College of Law teaching Strategic Management and the Economics of the Legal Services Industry. He has also acted as a subject matter expert and practitioner mentor for LawWithoutWalls since 2012 and is the Innovation Officer for the inaugural year of LawWithoutWalls Inc.
Peters received a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is a solicitor in England and Wales.
At Miami Law he teaches Competitive Strategy and the Legal Service Industry
