Joan Martinez Evora received his Licenciado en Derecho degree with honors (J.D. equivalent, summa cum laude) in July 2004, after five years of law studies at the University of Havana School of Law. After graduation, he joined the faculty as a full time Professor in the Department of Civil and Family Law. While a Professor, Martinez also argued before the municipal and appellate courts in civil, criminal and family law cases.
Martinez joined the University of Miami School of Law in 2009 as an LL.M. student and transferred to the J.D. program. He obtained his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, in May of 2011 and was selected to be a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University for the 2011-2012 Academic year. During his studies at Miami Law, Martinez was selected to be a member of the International Moot Court Board and competed at the II International Commercial Arbitration Competition in Madrid, Spain, where he received the Eric E. Bergsten Award for third best oralist. Martinez also served as a Research and Teaching Assistant to Business Law Professors Rene Sacasas and Patricia S. Abril at the University of Miami School of Business.
Martinez's areas of academic interest include Civil, Corporate, and International Law. At Miami Law he will be teaching Law of Obligations in Spanish in the Fall and International Family Law in the Spring.
