David Nelken is visiting the Law School from the University of Macerata in Italy, where he is the Distinguished Professor of Legal Institutions and Social Change, and Cardiff Law School, where he is a Professor of Law.

He previously taught at Cambridge, Edinburgh and London Universities, and remains Honourary Professor of Law at University College in London and Distinguished Visiting Research Professor of Law at the University of Wales. In addition, he has held visiting posts at the University of Seattle; Sydney University; Monash University; the University of New South Wales; the University of Copenhagen; Nottingham Law School; New York University; the University of California, Berkley; and Birkbeck College at the University of London.

Professor Nelken is a well-known scholar of comparative socio-legal studies and criminology. He has authored, edited, and contributed to several published works including The Limits of The Legal Process (recipient of the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Book Award in 1985); The Futures of Criminology; Law as Communication; Legal Culture, Diversity and Globalization; The Corruption of Politics and the Politics of Corruption; and Comparing Legal Cultures. His award-winning 1983 book The Limits of the Law: A Study of Landlords, Law and Crime received a Distinguished Scholar award from the American Sociological Association (Criminology Section). 

He will teach a seminar on Comparative Criminal Justice during the fall 2009 semester.
