JoNel Newman, associate professor of clinical legal education, received her B.A. from the University of Missouri and her J.D. from Yale University, where she was senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. Upon graduation, she clerked for Judge R. Lanier Anderson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and then practiced with Garrison, Silbert & Arterton in New Haven. Professor Newman subsequently worked for the Florida Justice Institute and the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union Foundation, acting as lead counsel in numerous civil rights, law reform, class action, immigration, and prisoner litigation cases, and at Florida Legal Services, where she was responsible for providing litigation support to legal services organizations throughout Florida and for the litigation of Migrant Farmworker Justice Project cases. Professor Newman serves as a Commissioner on the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration.  She teaches professional responsibility and directs the Health and Elder Law Clinic.
