Professor David Abraham’s Paper Listed On SSRN’s Top Ten Download List Professor Abraham’s paper, "Doing Justice on Two Fronts: The Liberal Dilemma in Immigration," was listed on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) on the Top Ten Download List for Labor Law. Full story.

Professor David Abraham Speaks at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association Professor Abraham participated in the 102nd Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association, which took place in New York on August 11-14, 2007. He presented a paper titled "The Bush Regime as Authoritarian State." Full story.

Professor Ricardo J. Bascuas Represents Plaintiff in First Amendment Lawsuit Involving Cockfights Professor Ricardo J. Bascuas, along with co-counsel David O. Markus, filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Advanced Consulting and Marketing, a company that broadcasts cockfights on the internet. Full story.

Professor Patrick O. Gudridge Gives Faculty Talk on Florida Constitutional Law Professor Gudridge presented a paper to the UM Law School faculty, titled "Complexity and Contradiction in Florida Constitutional Law." In this paper, Professor Gudridge discusses judicial restrictions imposed by the Florida Supreme Court on the Florida Constitution's amendment processes. Full story.

 

Professor Elizabeth M. Iglesias Appointed to Advisory Board of the New Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University in New Orleans The Board will oversee, advise, and appraise institute work, assist in fund development for the institute, and participate in the annual evaluation of the performance of the institute director. The Institute’s mission is to apply Catholic social teaching to analyze, educate, advocate, and ultimately make a tangible contribution to solving the problems of race, poverty and migration in South and Latin America. Professor Lili Levi Speaks at Florida Bar Convention Professor Levi participated in a panel entitled “First Amendment & the US Supreme Court.” The panel analyzed the Supreme Court’s First Amendment decisions of the 2006-2007 Term. Full story.

Professor Bernard H. Oxman Gives Interview on the Law of the Sea Treaty Professor Oxman answered questions from reporter David R. Sands of The Washington Times, concerning the congressional debate on the ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty. Full story.

Professor Irwin Stotzky Speaks on Current Immigration Issues Professor Stotzky spoke at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami on Sunday, August 12, 2007. He addressed the congregation on the current immigration crisis. Full story.

Professor William H. Widen Gives Faculty Workshop at the University of Virginia School of Law Professor Widen presented a paper titled "Should Theories of Asset Partitioning Be Revised?" In the paper, Professor Widen discusses the use of substantive consolidation in bankruptcy proceedings for large public companies. Full story.

Professor William H. Widen Gives Faculty Workshop at Ohio State University Professor Widen conducted a workshop at the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University, focusing on his empirical research on bankruptcy reorganizations. Full story.

Professor Kele S. Williams Authors Report and Recommendations on Improving Educational Outcomes for Children in Florida's Foster Care System The report, published jointly with the statewide advocacy organization Florida's Children First, is the cornerstone of an advocacy campaign to improve implementation of existing laws and, where necessary, change laws and administrative policies. Professor Richard L. Williamson, Jr. is Keynote Speaker at Annual Meeting of The Florida Bar’s International Law Section Professor Williamson gave the keynote address to the members of the International Law Section of The Florida Bar. His topic was entitled "Environmental and Proliferation Threats: Do we need more enforcement authority beyond our territorial waters?" Full story.

UM Law School Faculty Members Take Berlin By Storm From Wednesday, July 25th to Saturday, July 28, 2007, an impressive delegation from The University of Miami School of Law faculty traveled to Berlin to participate in the 2007 Joint Annual Meeting of the Law and Society Association and the Research Committee on Sociology of Law (International Sociological Association) at Humboldt University. The theme of the meeting, Law and Society in the 21st Century: Transformations, Resistances, Futures, was to encourage debate on the transformations that are redefining law and society in the new century.
