Estate Planning Program Home / LL.M. / Estate Planning Program
The Graduate Program in Estate Planning is a unique educational experience. It is the only existing full-time law school graduate program leading to a master’s degree in estate planning. The comprehensive coverage of estate planning topics offered by its curriculum is unavailable elsewhere. The program explores the areas necessary to the development of a competent estate planner, including the applicable income and wealth transfer tax laws, planning strategies, fiduciary administration, drafting, ethics and the use of technological aids in the planning process.
The graduate program begins with a traditional 14-week fall semester of course work covering core conceptual topics, including Introduction to Estate Planning and Probate, Federal Wealth Transfer Tax, Income Tax for Estate Planners, Federal Income Taxation of Trusts and Estates, Corporate Tax, Partnership Tax, and Federal Tax Research Methods.
The spring semester consists of a series of one-week, one credit modular courses that integrate or build on the core courses. The modular format allows students to concentrate fully on the particular subject matter covered each week, and is ideal for an integrated curriculum covering a series of discrete topics. In addition, the format makes it possible to attract a faculty of nationally recognized estate planning authorities who visit the school for the one-week period of their course. The spring curriculum also includes a semester long drafting course that culminates in the preparation of an estate plan under the direct supervision of a practicing estate planning attorney.
