Now in its nineteenth consecutive year, Partnership for Professionalism is scheduled in fall and in spring of each academic year. The November 12, 2008 meeting was held at the University of Miami BankUnited Center where 120 judges, attorneys and law students attended.
Informal roundtable discussions are held during a buffet dinner provided for the participants. At each of 12 tables are seated a judge, three attorneys, and six students. Prepared scenarios that present issues of civility, ethics and professionalism are discussed at each table, followed by summations by the students coordinated by UM Law alumnus Judge Stanford Blake who currently serves as the administrative judge for the criminal division of the 11th Judicial Circuit for Miami-Dade County. Judge Blake’s commentary gave the participants an appropriate mix of humor and thoughtful remarks at the end of the evening. Also contributing concluding remarks was retired Judge Philip Bloom, now of counsel with Squire Sanders & Dempsey in the firm’s Miami office.
Members of the bench who participated in November included judges Peter Adrien, Jerald Bagley, Stan Blake, Philip Bloom, Ronald Dresnick, Pedro Echarte, Michael Genden, Carroll Kelly, Lester Langer, and Victoria Platzer. Additionally, 26 attorneys volunteered their time and talent for the table and floor discussions at the November 12 dinner.
UM Law alumni from the bench and bar are invited to participate in the dinners. The evenings are interesting and rewarding, not only for the student participants, but also for the many judges and attorneys who assist in the development of civility, ethics, and professionalism in our South Florida legal community.
The coordinator of Partnership for Professionalism is Associate Dean of Students
