Gubernatorial Fellows Program

Governor Jeb Bush established the Gubernatorial Fellows Program in 2004. This program provides leadership training to outstanding Florida graduate and undergraduate students interested in public service. By immersing students in key areas of government, including the Executive Office of the Governor and the Governor's Agencies, these future leaders will obtain first-hand, high-level, on the job training as well as valuable experience and insight on government and how it works.

Approximately 12 students from across the state are selected to serve. Eligible candidates are enrolled as graduate students or upperclassmen at a Florida college or university. Each Fellow is matched with projects based on their expertise and interest. They are treated as high-level staff and are expected to participate, perform, and contribute at that level.

We invite you to learn more about this exciting new opportunity by visiting  http://www.myflorida.com/fellows/ Applications are available on-line and will be accepted through April 8, 2005. Due to the competitive nature of this program, early application is recommended. Public service is one of our country's most challenging and rewarding callings. This program affords Florida's best and brightest a unique opportunity to discover this important, demanding and rewarding world.

Equal Justice Works Summer Corp Applications

The 2005 Summer Corps application is now available on the Equal Justice Works website! Law students have until March 30 to submit a complete application, but only those who meet all eligibility criteria can be accepted into the program. For information on steps students can take to prepare a successful application, please consult the "Frequently Asked Questions" section on the Equal Justice Works website at http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/summercorpsfaq.php. This year, Equal Justice Works is offering $1,000 education awards to 250 law students through the Summer Corps program! Students with qualifying civil public interest internships are encouraged to apply.

H.O.P.E. Fellowship Information

Throughout the year, H.O.P.E. is dedicated to raising funds and support to enhance the fellowship opportunities for our students. Fellowships are offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer to law students who work public interest jobs.

Who is eligible to apply?

-   -All 2L or 3L UM Law School students may apply for semester fellowships; rising 2Ls and 3Ls may apply for summer fellowships.

-  - Due to limited resources, priority will be given to students who have a demonstrated commitment to public service and financial need.

Students who accept H.O.P.E. fellowships must:

-  - Complete 200 hours of work during summer placements or 100 hours of work during semester placements.

-   Turn in a 250-word article describing the fellowship experience. This article may be used to publicize H.O.P.E. and to inform future Fellows.

-  - Contribute to the continuing development of the public interest area in which they serve (i.e. create a how-to guide for students looking to work in a similar area, organize a day of advocacy on behalf of the community served, create educational materials for the community served). Dean Lennon must approve this activity.

-  - Arrange for other UM students to attend court when host agency is presenting or arrange for a speaker come to campus to discuss the organizations' work.

-  - Participate in at least one fundraising even for H.O.P.E.

What organizations or agencies may I work for?

-  - A list of approved H.O.P.E. Fellowship placements can be obtained in the H.O.P.E. office, A-211 Law School, or found on the H.O.P.E. website.

-  - You may serve as a H.O.P.E. Fellow at an organization not previously approved. Write a proposal and submit it to Dean Lennon. The organization must have an attorney to supervise work.

When are applications due?

- Completed applications should be turned into Dean Lennon's office, A-211 Law School. You may mail your applications to HOPE Fellows Application, A-211 Law School, P.O. Box 248087, Coral Gables, FL 33124-8087.

Save the Date:  2005 Equal Justice Works Conference

The 2005 Equal Justice Works Fall Events will be held at the Hilton Washington Hotel. The Conference and Career Fair will take place on Thursday, October 27 & Friday, October 28. The Annual Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 27.  Over 200 public interest employees from around the country will attend the event.  Don't miss this amazing opportunity to interview, network, and meet other public interest minded students.

14th Annual Delaware Minority Job Fair

As part of an effort to recruit talented students and increase diversity in the Delaware Bar, a number of law firms, corporations, and governmental legal employers will participate in the Fourteenth Annual Delaware Minority Job Fair for Second- and Third-Year Law Students, which will be held on the Wilmington campus of the Widener University School of Law on Saturday, August 20, 2005. The Job Fair, which is by invitation only, is limited to students who are in their second- and third year of law school during the 2005-2006 school year.

The Delaware Minority Job Fair differs from many other job fairs in that students must be invited to attend rather than simply registering and showing up. In return, the students invited receive considerably more individual attention than is possible in a very large job fair. When you submit an application for an invitation you are, in effect, submitting an application to all of the Delaware legal employers who participate in the program. You will be eligible for an invitation if two or more of those employers wish to meet you. Iinvitations enclosing a proposed interviewing schedule will be sent out in late June . Your response, accepting or declining the invitation, will be due by Tuesday, July 5.

There are no application or registration fees. If you are invited, you will need to arrange for your own transportation to Wilmington. They will attempt to reimburse you for all or at least a portion of your transportation expenses. Historically they have been able to reimburse 100% of such expenses. We will provide a breakfast to all invited students. A number of experienced attorneys and leaders of our Bench and Bar will join us for breakfast to answer any questions you might have about life and the practice of law in Delaware.

To become eligible for an invitation you must complete an application form and mail it, e-mail it or fax it, along with your resume and law school transcript.  Applications are available in the Career Planning Center
