 SPRING OCI IS COMING!!

The Spring 2006 On Campus Interview (OCI) Program will take place from Monday, March 20 to Wednesday, April 19.  Registration and bidding will take place through eAttorney's OCI+ program available at www.eattorney.com from Monday, February 20 to Tuesday, February 28.  All information, including participating employers and hiring criteria, will be available starting on February 20.

 

To use the OCI+ program, you will need to login using your assigned member login ID and password.  An e-mail containing your member login ID and password will be sent to your UM account on Friday, February 17.  (Please note:  Login information for returning 2Ls, 3Ls and LL.M. students remains unchanged from the Fall OCI program).

New to the OCI+ program?  Used OCI+ in the fall but want a refresher course? If you are new to the OCI+ program or would like a refresher course, please attend one of two OCI+ training sessions taking place on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16.  Each session will take place from 12:45 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Room 108.  You only need to attend one session.  Those who attend the training will receive their OCI+ login information that day. Please direct any questions to oci@law.miami.edu.

2006 Summer Corps Program!

Equal Justice Works is excited to announce the launch of the 2006 Summer Corps program! Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that will provide 315 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 education award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal internship at a nonprofit, public interest organization.

Summer Corps slots are awarded on a first come, first served basis, with consideration for Equal Justice Works law school representation and geographic diversity. For more information about the eligibility criteria and application and selection process for the 2006 Summer Corps program, please visit our website at www.equaljusticeworks.org. The online application will be available to students via our website from March 22 at 12:00 noon through April 5 at 5:00 pm.  

This year, in response to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Equal Justice Works is committed to setting aside 65 Summer Corps slots for law students who are providing disaster-related legal services in the Gulf Coast region. Students are eligible for the Katrina Summer Corps if the primary purpose of their internships is to assist hurricane victims or evacuees in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi or Texas.

 

 

NALP Apartment Exchange 

NALP is pleased to announce the annual online Apartment Exchange is now available for use through NALP's website. Law students and 2006 summer clerks can point their browsers to www.nalpexchange.org where they can search and post available summer housing opportunities from all around the country. The service is free and easy to use. We hope that you will encourage your students and incoming summer associates to access the Apartment Exchange today -- it is a proven resource for success in the search for temporary summer housing! Dade County Bar Association -- Unique Professional Development Program

The Professionalism Committee of the Dade County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section presents "Unlock Your Potential: Strategies for Professionalism and Professionalism Development," featuring keynote speaker Stephen B. Bright, Director of the Southern Center for Human Rights and Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School.  The Program will take place on Friday, March 10, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Miami.  More than 15 speakers -- including the Miami-Dade County Attorney, several law firm partners, in-house counsel, presidents of legal bar associations, legal recruiters and authors -- will present various topics throughout the day, such as "Rainmaking," "How to Hang Your Own Shingle the Right Way," "Financial Planning," "Public Service Legal Careers," "Creative Legal Careers" and "The Responsibility of the Legal Profession to Bring About Equal Justice."  To register for this event, please pick up a registration form in the CPC's Resource Room.  The deadline for advance registration is February 28, 2006 and the cost is $40 for UM Law students and members of the DCBA and $50 for non-members.  The late registration fee for all participants is $60.  Breakfast and lunch is included.  For more information, please call the DCBA at (305) 371-2220.

New Jersey Summer Public Interest Legal Intern Fellowship

Legal Service of New Jersey invites applications from 1Ls and 2L's  for its paid public Interest Legal Intern Fellowship Program for the summer of 2006.  The program's purpose is to promote awareness of and commitment to careers in public interest law by offering rewarding employment opportunities to law students.  The program seeks people who have a demonstrated commitment to helping the disadvantaged through prior work, extracurricular activities and volunteer efforts.  Applications are considered on a rolling basis and can be picked up at the career planning Center, or downloaded from LSNJ's website at www.lsnj.org

 

Katrina Legal Relief Efforts!

Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps Attorney Positions Available Immediately. 

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Equal Justice Works plans to expand its Pro Bono Legal Corps program, sending 10 Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps Attorneys to the hardest hit areas in the Gulf Coast region. These attorneys will be placed at organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to help the hundreds of thousands of people left without homes, jobs and social services due to the damage from the hurricane.

 

The mission of the Pro Bono Legal Corps (PBLC) is to build a commitment to pro bono service at law schools and among future lawyers by expanding law student and law school involvement in the delivery of legal services. Supported by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, the PBLC program offers its members, called Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps Attorneys, the opportunity to implement projects that promote public service among law students while providing critically needed legal services.

 

Katrina Pro Bono Legal Corps Host Organizations:

  • The Louisiana Bar Foundation. Two attorneys placed in Baton Rouge will serve Louisiana Katrina victims statewide.

  • The Pro Bono Project. Two attorneys will serve Katrina victims in New Orleans.

  • North Mississippi Rural Legal Services. Four attorneys placed in Oxford, Jackson and Gulfport will serve Mississippi Katrina victims statewide.

  • Legal Services of Alabama. Two attorneys placed in Montgomery will serve Hurricane Katrina victims statewide.

Arthur C. Helton Fellowship

Application instructions and eligibility guidelines for the Arthur C. Helton Fellowship Program are available on the web site of The American Society of International Law at <<http://www.asil.org/aboutasil/heltonindex.html>>. Established in honor of Arthur C. Helton's remarkable career advocating for refugees and his many contributions to international law, this program will assist students and young lawyers in need of modest sums (up to $1000) to pursue their first opportunities to engage in human rights work and research. The application deadline is February 15, 2006 and awards will be made by March 15, 2006.

 

"Working in the Public Interest: Challenging Poverty

Through Law" conference

The University of Georgia School of Law cordially invites you to attend the first "Working in the Public Interest: Challenging Poverty Through Law" conference on April 7-8, 2006. The conference will be a two day event commencing on Friday,

April 7th with our keynote speaker, followed by a reception hosted by the national office of the American Constitution Society (ACS). On Saturday, we will have an entire day of panels and roundtable discussions with speakers drawn from all parts of the country. The conference will be held in Athens, Georgia, at the University of Georgia School of Law, which is approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The event is FREE for all law students, which includes meals for both days. We will also coordinate housing for conference attendees to stay with students here in Athens at no cost.

Autism Legislative Project

Second and third year law students are invited to participate in a pro bono opportunity to improve state and national legislation on autism, the fastest growing developmental disability in the nation.  Working under the direction of an experienced Chicago attorney, students will collaboratively research and propose legislative amendments both within their respective states and on a federal level.  Regular tele-conferences will be held  to discuss ongoing research and proposed legislative efforts, as well as to develop and evaluate strategies for the advancement of project objectives.  Participating students will be required to volunteer a minimum of five (5) hours per week conducting research and performing additional administrative tasks.  Academic credit is potentially available.  Interested students should submit a resume to alprecruiting@yahoo.com for consideration.

 

Rebellious Lawyering Conference

The Rebellious Lawyering Conference, an annual student-run conference that brings together practitioners, law students, and community activists / advocates from around the country to discuss innovative, progressive approaches to law and social change.  The 12th Annual Rebellious Lawyering Conference will take place February 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2006  at Yale Law School, New Haven, CT. PILI Public Interest law Initiative Summer Internships: Chicago

PILI Summer Internships offer excellent legal experience and training at one of 20 PILI affiliated public interest agencies in Chicago.  PILI provides stipends of $4,500 to support a limited number of law students hired to work at one of the agencies for 10 full-time weeks in the summer.  PILI supports approximately 45 interns.  2L students can apply as early as October 15, 1L's must wait until December 1.  Find out more about the program and how to apply at the PILI website at www.pili-law.orgOpportunities are available in Civil Rights, Children's Rights, Environmental Law, Social Justice Issues, Immigration law, Disability Rights, Fair Housing Law, LGBT rights, and other legal issues!

 

ABA Division for Public Services 2006 Internship Program

The American Bar Association Division for Public Service invites you to participate in the annual public service summer internship.  The program is designed to engage law students in an individualized public interest legal research and writing project over a 10-week period, and spend the summer in the DC office of the ABA.  The internship is unpaid, and must be sponsored by a law school faculty member.    If you are interested you will need to submit a resume, cover letter, name, address and telephone number of the faculty member who has agreed to review your work, and names and addresses of two references.  An essay of 3 to 5 pages describing the public interest law research and writing summer project you propose  needs to be submitted as well.  For more information contact Carrie X. FCBA Foundation Now Accepting Applications for Funding of

Unpaid Legal Internships at Government Agencies:

For the thirteenth consecutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation will award stipends to law students from its Chairman Robert E. Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund.  In 2006, the Foundation will award at least four $4,000 stipends to law students employed as unpaid summer interns in positions with the FCC and other government agencies or entities with jurisdiction over the communications industry (i.e., broadcasting, cable television, telephony, satellite and information technology).

 In addition, the Foundation will select one outstanding intern among the four chosen to receive an additional stipend of $600 for the summer, as the "Max Paglin Intern."  Mr. Paglin was the former General Counsel and Executive Director of the FCC, and the founder of the Golden Jubilee Commission on Telecommunications, which compiled a definitive legislative history of the Communications Act.

 Requirements Applicants will be selected on the basis of: (1) a demonstrated interest in the communications field, (2) having secured or having pending, an unpaid summer position (internship) for at least 8 weeks in communications with a government agency, (3) dependence on financial assistance in order to accept the unpaid internship in a government agency involved in communications; and (4) community activities.  To the extent a recipient receives unanticipated funding for the unpaid internship, the FCBA Foundation's general policy is to reduce its scholarship awards by any amount that a recipient's total funding (including all sources) for the internship would otherwise exceed $7,000.

United States Department of Agriculture 2006 Summer Internships
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Office of the General Counsel, is accepting applications for volunteer summer intern positions at its headquarters in Washington, DC and 17 regional offices.  The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is an independent legal agency within the USDA.  The OGC performs a variety of legal functions on behalf of the Secretary of Agriculture and the 38 agencies within the USDA, including counseling in the formulation of policy, drafting contracts, reviewing regulations and proposed legislation, and handling both trial and appellate litigation.  Summer interns will have the opportunity to work alongside OGC attorneys and gain experience in the areas of regulatory law, legislation and civil and criminal litigation matters.  Interested students should submit a cover letter and resume to Ms. Deborah L. Natural Resources Defense Council

The Los Angeles office of the Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the country's preeminent environmental non-profits, is now accepting applications for paid summer legal interns (2L and 1L) for the 2006 summer.  The hiring process is rolling, so students should apply early.  Information on the internship and instructions on applying are available at the CPC.

 

WRITING COMPETITIONS:

 

ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice

2006 Gellhorn-Sargentich Law Student Essay Competition

TOPIC: Discuss a problem or issue arising at the intersection of constitutional and administrative law.

PRIZE: The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and round-trip airfare and

accommodation to attend the Section's Fall Conference in Washington, DC. At

the discretion of the editorial board, the winning entry will be selected for publication in Administrative and Regulatory Law News.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to currently enrolled students of

ABA-accredited law schools who are also members of the ABA Section of

Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice. The essay must be the student's original, unpublished work. The paper may be prepared to satisfy a course requirement or for other academic credit. However, the essay must be the work of the submitting student without substantial editorial input from others. Co-authored papers are ineligible.  Only one essay may be submitted per entrant.

FORMAT: Essays must not exceed 12 pages, including title, citations, and

any footnotes. The text of the essay must be double-spaced, with twelve-point font and one-inch margins. Entries should reflect the style of Administrative Law News articles rather than law review style. Entrants are encouraged to review past copies of the News available at www.abanet.org/adminlaw/news/backpage.html - prior to drafting their submissions. Citations must be embedded in text or in  footnote form; essays with endnotes will be disqualified. Cites must conform with the 18th Edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.

JUDGING: Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: -Creativity and clarity of the proposal or thesis -Organization -Quality of the analysis and research -Grammar, syntax and form The entries will be judged anonymously by the Fellows of the ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Each submission must include a SEPARATE COVER PAGE with the entrant's name, law school, year of study, mailing and email address,

and phone number. The contestant's name and other identifying markings, such

as school name, MAY NOT appear on any copy of the submitted essay. Send

three copies of the essay, a digital copy in Word format on an IBM-formatted

diskette or CD-ROM. Submissions must be postmarked no later than March 31,

2006 and mailed to American Bar Association, Admin Law Essay Competition,

740 15th Street NW, Suite 900, Washington, D.C. 20005.

The American College of Legal Medicine is proud to announce the two writing competitions for 2006.  The brochures for these two competitions can be found at http://aclm.org/resources/swc_winners04-05.asp.  

For the Bioethics Competition, the first place winner will be awarded $1,000 and a paid round-trip, coach airfare along with one night's hotel accommodation to present his/her paper as part of the ACLM Annual Meeting in Las Vegas on March 4, 2006.  The second place winner will receive $500 and the third place winner will receive $250.  For the other Student Writing Competition, the ACLM will award $1,000 to papers winning in one of three categories: the Schwartz Award (to a medical student), the Letourneau Award (to a law student) and the Hirsh Award (to a dentistry, podiatry, nursing, pharmacy, health science, health care administration, or public health student).

All papers submitted will receive consideration for publication in the Journal of Legal Medicine or other medical legal publications.

 

National Association of Counsel for Children 2006

Student Essay Competition.

The winner will be awarded $1,000 and a scholarship to the NACC National Children's Law Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The winning essay will be published in the NACC 2006 Children's Law Manual.  Students interested in children's legal issues are encouraged to submit an essay for consideration. Essays are due by August 1, 2006.

 The NACC is a non-profit professional membership organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of children by promoting excellence in the field of children's law. CEU Summer University

The CEU Summer University (SUN) program hosts high-level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary and innovative academic courses as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development in the social sciences and the humanities. The one- or two-week long courses involve distinguished international faculty (including CEU professors), and advanced doctoral students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals as participants. The application deadline is February 14, 2006, unless stated otherwise in the announcement of a particular course.

A Special Diversity Career Fair for Law Professionals of color, which will focus on helping companies and law firms attract legal professionals of color, will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 28-29, 2006 from 10 a,m, to 4 p.m. at the Adams Mark Hotel, 400 North Olive Street,  in Downtown Dallas Texas.
