DON'T MISS
THIS: Professional and Business Etiquette - How to
Interview with Success and Aplomb!
(also known as: which fork do I use and how
do I write a thank you note!!) (Everyone who wants to interview
successfully!)
Once again, Dr.
Sharon Abrahams of McDermott, Will and Emery - one of the most popular speakers
to come to our campus - will be here tomorrow, Wednesday
September 8 at 12:30 in room 108. She will talk to students
about interviewing etiquette, how to handle lunch or dinner interviews, the
all-important thank you note and many other little helpful and informative
tidbits. Get all the answer to those nagging questions that you know your
mother told you about but you are too embarrassed to ask! No question is
too stupid or small. The guy next to you is thinking it too and is
relieved that it is coming from you! Come for a fun and informative
afternoon. Questions? Call the Career Planning Center.
OCI Information
(2L, 3L)
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Hurricane Frances
employer selections will be available beginning on Thursday of this week.
Please make sure to check your e-mail account throughout the day Thursday and
Friday, and sign up for interviews as soon as possible. OCI interviews will
start Monday, September 13th.
Mock
Interviews (2L, 3L)
If you are interested in a mock interview, attorneys from
the community have volunteered to perform mock interviews and give critiques
from September 7th through the 10th. The experience
interviewing and the feedback is invaluable. Sign-ups are available at the
Career Planning Center beginning today on a first come first serve basis.
Counselors from the office are also available to perform this service.
Department
of Justice (DOJ)Attorney General's Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program
(2L. 3L)
Attorneys at the Department of Justice practice in
virtually every area of the law. Department attorneys work on the significant
and complex legal issues facing our nation and enjoy primary responsibility for
case management early in their careers. The Department also provides excellent
in-house training for litigators. Each year the department hires about 150
entry-level attorneys and 140 summer interns. The application for both
programs must be received by the DOJ by September 18, 2004. Detailed
information about the application process, interview schedules and notification
process as well as the ability to apply on-line, is available on the DOJ web
page at
www.usdoj.gov/oarm.
Eleventh
Judicial Circuit Court Internship Program (2L,3L)
ATTN: 2L's and 3L's:
Are
you interested in working with a Judge? The Fall
2004 Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court
(Miami, FL) places second and third year students in a direct working
relationship with County and Circuit judges in the Civil, Criminal, Juvenile,
Family and Domestic Violence Divisions.
This is an unpaid judicial internship which provides wonderful
experience and allows you to see the litigation process from a different
viewpoint. The
schedule by which the law student will intern will be a matter to be
determined between the student and judge. However, a minimum of 5-10 hours
per week is required. Interns are not permitted to work with any law firm
or other legal agency while participating in this program.
Applications for this program are now available in the
Career Planning. Please return them
to Career Planning by Tuesday,
September 7th at 4:00 p.m. A
short orientation will be held on
Sept. 9th at 5:30 p.m. in room 109. During the heavy period of
on-campus interviewing - mainly September 9th to October 20th
- the students' first commitment will be their internship; however, it is
expected that judges and their staffs will afford students flexibility for
interviewing.
Lavender law Conference (Everyone)
Every year, the sharpest legal minds in the LGBT community
gather at Lavender Law, the annual conference of the National Lesbian and Gay
Law Association (NLGLA) and the National Lesbian and Gay Law Foundation (NLGLF).
More than 500 attorneys and law professors and 200 law students are expected to
attend Lavender Law 2004 in Minneapolis, September 30-October 2.
This year's conference will feature dozens of panels, symposia, courses, and
full plenary sessions on cutting-edge legal issues affecting LGBT individuals
and the community. The Lavender Law Programming Committee has invited the
country's leading lawyers to head discussions and strategy sessions on practical
litigation skills, sodomy law developments, will drafting and estate planning,
employment discrimination, workplace diversity, domestic violence, transgender
issues, career development, LGBT in academia, civil rights, HIV and AIDS,
immigration law, the military, legislation updates, family law, LGBT youth and
much more!
Lavender Law also features a
Career Fair,
sponsored by
Faegre & Benson.
The Career Fair is an exciting opportunity for conference participants to
network and obtain jobs as attorneys and summer associates/interns with
employers from all over the country.
The conference fee for Law students who attend Lavender Law will be picked up
by the Career Planning Center. E-mail Marcy Cox at
mcox@law.miami.edu if you are interested in attending.
Hispanic National Bar
Association - 2004 Unidos en Nueva York Convention and Job Fair
The Hispanic
National Bar Association (HNBA) will be celebrating its Annual
Convention, in New York
City,
at the Marriott Marquis
in Times Square,
from October 9 through October 12, 2004.
The
theme
for this year's Convention is "Unidos en Nueva York 2004,"
United in
New York.
As part of the
Convention, the HNBA will
once again host the largest Latino Job Fair in the country,
providing law students and,
for the first time in the organizations' history, admitted Latino
attorneys, a tremendous opportunity to meet, interview and network with private,
government and public interest employers from across the country.
Last year's convention held in San Jose, California brought
together over 50 employers and 300 law students. We expect an even greater turn
out this year. Please see the attached list of employers who have already
registered for this year's Job Fair
The Job Fair will be held on Monday, October 11, 2004
at the Marriott Marquis. Interviews will be scheduled in 30-minute
intervals
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a two-hour midday break (lunch
is not included for Job Fair-only
participants). Job Fair
interviewees
will have an opportunity to indicate a preference for up to six employers, and
will be scheduled for up to twelve interviews
(Please note that the actual number of interviews each
participant will receive cannot be guaranteed due to
a number of factors.)
Equal Justice Works Career Fair &
Conference
(1L, 2L, 3L)
The Equal Justice Works Career Fair and Conference will be
held Thursday October 28, and Saturday October 29, in Washington DC. All
students interested in working in public interest law either for the summer or
after graduation should consider attending. There is a list on the EJW website
of the employers that will be attending the conference, with information on how
to apply. Last year many of the students who attended received offers from the
program. DO NOT MISS THIS INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY. Any student who wants to
attend the conference needs to e-mail Randee Breiter at
rbreiter@law.miami.edu with their name, phone number, cell phone (if
applicable) and class year. The University of Miami School of Law will be
paying for conference admission, and needs to register all students who plan on
attending. The website for EJW is
www.equaljusticeworks.com.
Judicial
Clerkship
(3L)
If you are interested in seeking a post-graduate judicial
clerkship, please make an appointment to see Liz Stack as soon as possible to
discuss the details of the application process. You should also visit CPC for a
copy of the Judicial Clerkship Guide (red cover) in our Resource Room.
Government Opportunities
(IL, 2L, 3L)
Students interested in working with the government during
the summer or after graduation should visit the Career Planning Center and take a look at
the Government Honors Handbook in the Resource Room (pink cover). There
are many additional governmental agencies, other then the DOJ, that offer
opportunities to law students and graduates. Many of the Government
Honors Programs have early deadlines so don't delay.
Listed below are a few of the organizations that may be interesting to you for
both summer jobs and permanent positions.
ATTENTION Recent Grads:
