Echoing Green Fellowship (3L)

 The global nonprofit Echoing Green is launching a search for visionary new leaders who want to start their own organizations to create lasting social change.  Through the prestigious two-year Echoing Green Fellowship, emerging social entrepreneurs have the chance to receive $60,000 in seed funding and technical assistance to launch organizations that address the root causes of society's most difficult problems.

Arthur C. Helton Fellowship Program

Application instructions and eligibility guidelines for the Arthur C. Helton Fellowship Program are now available on the web site of The American Society of International Law at  www.asil.org. Established in honor of Arthur C. Helton's remarkable career advocating for refugees and his many contributions to international law, this one-time program will assist students and young lawyers in need of modest sums (up to $1000) to pursue their first opportunities to engage in human rights work and research. The application deadline is January 31, 2005 and awards will be made by March 1, 2005.

 

 

Patent Bar Examination (Everyone)

Interested in pursuing a career in Intellectual Property?  If you have a technical or science background, you may qualify to sit for the Patent Bar examination.  Stop by CPC to pick up an informational packet on how to apply for the examination.  For additional information, go to www.patbar.com and click on the "How to Apply" menu item.

 

 The Miami-Dade Office of Statewide Prosecution (2L, 3L)

 If you want to gain invaluable experience in complex criminal litigation, apply for a Spring 2005 internship at the Miami-Dade Office of Statewide Prosecution.  As an intern, you will assist Assistant Statewide Prosecutors in their investigation and prosecution of various crimes - ranging from fraud against the government, large scale consumer fraud (i.e. identity theft), and violent offenses (i.e. narcotics trafficking) committed by organized groups.  Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be willing to work 20 hours per week.  Application deadline is December 15, 2004.  For more information on how to apply, look up job posting #33683 or see Karen Warren in CPC.

 

Federal Magistrate Judge Opportunities (2L, 3L)

Currently there are a few opportunities on our job postings to work with Magistrate Judges.  These are amazing opportunities that you should consider.  Both Judge Ted Klein and Judge Christine McAliely  have current openings for students.  These are great experiences as you will have the opportunity to talks with the judge about his/her cases, the law, etc., and discuss what happens at hearings, etc. Take a look at the postings and take advantage of what could be an excellent experience. 

 

Emory Public Interest Conference

Emory's student public interest group (EPIC) is holding a public interest conference at Emory Law School on Saturday, November 6, 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., and invites all law students to attend. Information is also available at www.law.emory.edu/students/epic.

There is no charge to attend, but please register on-line via the website. You can also register in person on the day of the conference.

Students can choose to attend two of the following panels:

Juvenile Death Penalty, Health Care: Limits and Obligations, Child Advocacy, Environmental Law.

 

Other conference highlights include: a panel of attorneys discussing their work with politics, government, a non-profit, and pro bono law firm work (discussing their work and lifestyle/financial considerations),

 a networking lunch session (4-5 students will be seated with an

attorney practicing in their field of interest). A keynote address by Clarence Harrison who was recently exonerated thanks to the efforts of the Georgia Innocence Project, a non-profit organization. Bar Luncheons (2L, 3L)

The South Miami-Kendall Bar Association has extended an invitation to UM Law students to attend their monthly luncheons.  Each month, the SMKBA would like to host two students for lunch.  The October lunch will take place on Friday, October 29th from 12-1:30pm at Flemming's Restaurant (East of US1 on S.W. 136th Street).  This is a great opportunity to network with local attorneys.   A sign up book will be placed at the front desk in the CPC.  Space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If you want more information about the SMKBA, visit www.smkba.com

 

Government Opportunities (IL, 2L, 3L)

Students interested in working with the government during the summer or after graduation should visit the Career Planning Center and take a look at the Government Honors Handbook in the Resource Room (pink cover).  There are many additional governmental agencies, other then the DOJ, that offer opportunities to law students and graduates.  Many of the Government Honors Programs have early deadlines so don't delay.  Listed below are a few of the organizations that may be interesting to you for both summer jobs and permanent positions.

Congratulations to all those of you who have passed the bar.  We know that you worked very hard to achieve this accomplishment.  Many of you are well into your job search. Please let us know  what we can to help you out.  Remember that we are here for you, and are available for resume review, career advice, mock interviews, and general resources.  If you are still looking for a job - don't panic.  There are many jobs out there, and we get information about more and more every day.  If you have found a job - please let us know.  If you know of a job for a classmate..... let us know about that as well!   Good luck!
