The Career Planning Center sponsors many programs throughout the year.  There are many programs that are coming up in these first few weeks of classes, and we hope to see many of you in attendance!  All programs start at 12:30 unless otherwise noted.

OCI Information (2L, 3L)

Don't forget to register for OCI.  Registration will continue through until, September 1 at 7:00am THERE ARE NO DEADLINE EXCEPTIONS.  Registering is simple. Log on to OCI+ at www.eattorney.com. and all the instructions are right there.   Make sure your resume is in Microsoft word format; either Microsoft Word 2000 or Microsoft Word 6.0., and follow the directions in the OCI handbook on how to enter your resume.  Once it is entered MAKE SURE TO PRINT IT OUT.  Remember, formatting may change, and you want to make sure that your resume looks its best.

 

Last Friday we posted 4 supplemental firms to OCI+.  Every Friday, though October 8th at 3:00pm, all supplemental employers will be posted to OCI+.  If you are interested in supplemental firms make sure to check the website.

It is wise to have your resume reviewed by a Career Planning professional prior to entering it on the OCI system. Counselors are available by appointment, through e-mail or drop off. 

Post Graduate Fellowship Opportunities

Have you ever dreamed of creating the perfect job?  Have you always wanted to help people in your community and just couldn't figure out how you could afford to do it?  Maybe a fellowship is for you.  There are several organizations that offer post graduate fellowships that give you the opportunity to create your dream job helping people, while paying you a salary and giving you the support you need in the building of a program.  Deadline dates for 3L's graduating are fast approaching.  Most are early in September.  Come hear about these fabulous opportunities and learn what it take to apply on Tuesday, August 31 at 12:30 in room 108. 

 

Shook Hardy and Bacon Presents:

 Resume and Interviewing Workshop (Everyone)

The Law firm of Shook Hardy and Bacon will be presenting a resume and interviewing workshop on. Wednesday, September 1, at 12:30 in room 108.  Darrell Payne, Esq. and Mi Kim, Esq.  from the Shook Hardy as well as the Honorable Michael Chavies of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court, and Marcia Reisman of the Dade County Bar Association Legal Aid will be speaking.  This workshop is great preparation for OCI.  Come hear what the firms think!  Pizza will be served!

 

H.O.P.E. Fall Fellowship Applications Available (2L, 3L)

H.O.P.E. (Helping Others thru Pro Bono Efforts) has fellowships available for the fall to do legal work at various public interest agencies throughout the community.  Applications are available on-line through the H.O.P.E. website at www.law.miami.edu/hope and are due to the dean of students office by September 2.

 

Department of Justice (DOJ)Attorney General's Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program (2L. 3L)

Attorneys at the Department of Justice practice in virtually every area of the law.  Department attorneys work on the significant and complex legal issues facing our nation and enjoy primary responsibility for case management early in their careers.  The Department also provides excellent in-house training for litigators.  Each year the department hires about 150 entry-level attorneys and 140 summer interns.  The application for both programs must be received by the DOJ by September 18, 2004.  Detailed information about the application process, interview schedules and notification process as well as the ability to apply on-line, is available on the DOJ web page at www.usdoj.gov/oarm Additionally, come hear attorney Tameesha Keel from the DOJ come and talk about the opportunities there on September 7, at 12:30 in Room 108.

 

Mock Interviews (2L, 3L)

If you are interested in a mock interview, attorneys from the community have volunteered to perform mock interviews and give critiques from September 7th through the 10th.  The experience interviewing and the feedback is invaluable.  Sign-ups are available at the Career Planning Center beginning today on a first come first serve basis. Counselors from the office are also available to perform this service.

 

Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court Internship Program  (2L,3L)

Students interested in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court Internship Program can pick up applications in CPC beginning August 24. These applications are due in Career Planning by Tuesday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m. There will be a meeting for all students who sign up for the program on Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 5:30 p.m. in room F109.  For more information on this program, please see Liz Stack in CPC. 

 

Lavender law Conference (Everyone)

Every year, the sharpest legal minds in the LGBT community gather at Lavender Law, the annual conference of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA) and the National Lesbian and Gay Law Foundation (NLGLF). More than 500 attorneys and law professors and 200 law students are expected to attend Lavender Law 2004 in Minneapolis, September 30-October 2.

This year's conference will feature dozens of panels, symposia, courses, and full plenary sessions on cutting-edge legal issues affecting LGBT individuals and the community.  The Lavender Law Programming Committee has invited the country's leading lawyers to head discussions and strategy sessions on practical litigation skills, sodomy law developments, will drafting and estate planning, employment discrimination, workplace diversity, domestic violence, transgender issues, career development, LGBT in academia, civil rights, HIV and AIDS, immigration law, the military, legislation updates, family law, LGBT youth and much more!

Lavender Law also features a Career Fair, sponsored by Faegre & Benson. The Career Fair is an exciting opportunity for conference participants to network and obtain jobs as attorneys and summer associates/interns with employers from all over the country.

Judicial Clerkship (3L)

If you are interested in seeking a post-graduate judicial clerkship, please make an appointment to see Liz Stack as soon as possible to discuss the details of the application process. You should also visit CPC for a copy of the Judicial Clerkship Guide (red cover) in our Resource Room.

 

Government Opportunities (IL, 2L, 3L)

Students interested in working with the government during the summer or after graduation should visit the Career Planning Center and take a look at the Government Honors Handbook in the Resource Room (pink cover).  There are many additional governmental agencies, other then the DOJ, that offer opportunities to law students and graduates.  Many of the Government Honors Programs have early deadlines so don't delay.  Listed below are a few of the organizations that may be interesting to you for both summer jobs and permanent positions. 

 

Securities and Exchange Commission                         

The divisions and offices of the SEC offer lawyers a wide variety of work for attorneys, ranging from litigation to rule-writing and from securities law to constitutional, international and administrative issues. http://www.sec.gov/jobs/lawyers.htm

 

Federal Trade Commission                                                     

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a dynamic agency offering challenging careers in a variety of fields. The FTC is an independent Federal agency that enforces antitrust and consumer protection laws and promotes competitive markets, free of deception and undue restrictions. There are over 500 attorneys at the FTC promoting the interests of all American consumers by supporting and protecting the free market.    If you're a law student looking for a fast-paced and challenging legal career, the FTC is the place for you. National Labor Relations Board                

The National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1935 to administer the National Labor Relations Act, the primary law governing relations between unions and employers in the private sector. During these many years, the NLRB's attorneys have honorably represented the public interest in the highly charged field of labor-management relations, and thereby have earned a reputation for impartiality, integrity and efficiency in carrying out the Agency's mission.  http://www.nlrb.gov/nlrb/about/careers/default.asp

Congratulations to all those of you who have survived taking the bar.  We know that many of you have now stepped up your job search, and we would love to do whatever we can to help you out.  Remember that we are here for you, and are available for resume review, career advice, mock interviews, and general resources.  If you are still looking for a job - don't panic.  There are many jobs out there, and we get information about more and more every day.  If you have found a job - please let us know.  If you know of a job for a classmate..... let us know about that as well!   Good luck!
