Article OF THE MONTH
experiencing THE OCI BLUES?
Don't Worry - there
IS LIFE BEYOND OCI!
By: Tere Rodriguez, Assistant Director/LL.M. Advisor,
CPC
So you were not one of the lucky few selected to
participate in the Fall On-Campus Interview Program, or "OCI" as we fondly
refer to the process. Well, definitely do not become disgruntled, depressed,
disgusted or any other of the "D" words. There is life beyond OCI! And, in
reality, you are in the majority, not minority, of law students who
initially register for this program.
The same employers who interview on-campus here also
travel to other Florida and out-of-state law schools. They interview
hundreds of students from different law schools for days at a time. The
competition is fierce because you are not merely vying for an interview slot
from dozens of UM applicants, but you are also competing with students from
other law schools for a position. As if this were not enough, OCI employers
usually require stellar academics, law review and moot court participation -
things which the majority of law students do not possess. But, even with all
these negative facts, guess what? There is still life beyond OCI.
Some of the stories you may hear concerning OCI are
just that - STORIES. You can even say
that they rise to the level of myths. For example, one of the largest OCI myths
is that most law jobs come about as a result of OCI. But, in fact, the
opposite is true.
First, most legal jobs are found through personal job
searches using advertised positions, contacts, referrals and networking.
Second, most employers do not participate in the OCI process at all. Only
the large firms and large institutional employers can afford the personnel
and the resources to go through this rather lengthy and time-consuming
endeavor. But, the large law firms comprise only a small percentage of the
legal job market. The bulk of legal employers are small and mid-size law
firms, and typically you will not interview with them or receive job offers
from them through OCI because most do not participate in it. Third, due to
the competitive nature of OCI, even if you do possess the academics and the
resume to achieve an initial interview, it does not guarantee a callback,
much less an offer of employment. Simply stated, there are not enough
positions to accommodate everyone who goes through this process.
So, what does all this mean? It means that even if you
were not selected to participate in OCI, or even if you were selected and
did not receive an offer, THERE IS LIFE BEYOND OCI.
Do not be discouraged - you will find a job, hopefully the right job
for you. The first step is to make an appointment with one of the counselors
in the Career Planning Center. We can discuss options and resources which
you have at your disposal, as well as talk with you about your career goals
and preferences. Come see us soon - we look forward to it.

all employees of all non-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under

substantial portion of their educational debt forgiven after making modest

INTERNSHIP & clerkship OPPORTUNITIES
FBI Honors
Program
Each summer, a
special group of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students is selected
to participate in the FBI Honors Internship Program in Washington, D.C., or
at a Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (RCFL) located throughout the
United States (www.rcfl.gov).
Program Overview
The FBI Honors
Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate school students an
exciting insider's view of FBI operations and provides an opportunity to
explore the many career opportunities within the Bureau. The Honors
Internship Program brings students to work at FBI Headquarters in
Washington, D.C., and usually begins on the first Monday in June and ends on
the second Friday in August. FBI Honors Interns can look forward to ten
extremely rewarding and interesting weeks. You'll be working side-by-side
with Special Agents and Professional Staff personnel on important cases and
management issues. You'll feel like you're a part of the Bureau...because
you are.
Honors Interns are
assigned to an FBI Headquarters division based on their academic discipline,
potential contribution to the division, and the needs of the FBI. For
instance, Honors Interns whose discipline is in the physical sciences may be
assigned to the FBI's Laboratory Division in nearby Quantico, Virginia.
Honors Interns whose discipline is in information technology may be assigned
to the FBI's Cyber Division or one of the FBI's IT divisions. All Honors
Interns are under the supervision of the head (i.e., Assistant Director) of
their assigned division.
By the end of your
internship, you will have a thorough understanding of the inner workings of
the FBI and a deep feeling of satisfaction that the work you have done has
helped the lives of ordinary citizens. You will also learn about the many
career opportunities at the FBI. No matter what career path you eventually
choose, serving as an FBI Honors Intern will be an experience you will never
forget, and one that will benefit you in all of your future endeavors.
How to Apply
Candidates
interested in applying for the FBI Honors Internship Program must submit a
complete application package by October 10, 2007,
to the field office nearest their school. The Honors Internship application
package must include all of the following:
The completed
Honors Internship application package should be forwarded to the
FBI Field Office nearest your
campus. Packages should be addressed to the attention of "Applicant
Coordinator" or "Applicant Recruiter" and must be
received on or before the deadline noted above. No electronic
applications are accepted. Please be aware that the FBI's mail screening
processes can delay the delivery to a specific office. It is strongly
recommended that you use Federal Express or a similar express delivery
service, particularly if you are sending the application within two weeks of
the deadline.
For more information on these and other internship opportunities, as
discussed at last week's program, please go to
http://www.fbijobs.gov/23.asp.

FBI upon returning to their respective campus, will be selected.
In order to be considered, individuals must have all

college/university full-time.

graduation from college.

graduate applicants, with the exception of graduating seniors, must be
returning to their respective college/university for at least one semester
immediately following the completion of the internship.
Students must be
attending a college/university that is accredited by one of the regional
national institutional associations recognized by the United States
Secretary of Education.
Students must have a
minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Students must possess
listening comprehension and translation proficiency of a Middle Eastern
language.

SCHOLARSHIPS &
FELLOWSHIPS
Presidential Management Fellowship Program
(3L)
The 2008 Presidential Management Fellows ("PMF") Program application season
will be open soon. The PMF Program is the premier program for leadership
development in the public sector. Its purpose is to attract outstanding men
and women to the Federal service. Each year, the program draws fellows from
a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who have a clear
commitment to excellence in the leadership and management of public policies
and programs.
The program provides a two-year federal government fellowship to individuals
who have completed a graduate-level course of study at an accredited college
or university. Since 1977, the PMF program and its predecessor, the
Presidential Management Intern ("PMI") Program, have been attracting
outstanding graduate, law, and doctoral-level students to the Federal
service.
The PMF Program is a passport to a unique and rewarding career experience
with the Federal Government. It provides Fellows with an opportunity to
apply the knowledge they acquired from graduate study. PMF assignments may
involve public policy and administration, domestic or international issues,
information technology, human resources, engineering, health and medical
sciences, law, financial management and many other fields in support of
public service programs.
Numbers per year: In recent years,
the number of fellows has ranged between four
hundred and six hundred. There is not a set
number of fellows selected per year. The number
hired is based on the hiring projections of
agencies as well as the number of
highly-qualified applicants.
Salary: Fellows must have a graduate
degree, meaning that they will be at least at a
GS-9 pay level ($54,272-$70,558 in the greater
Washington DC area, varies by geographic
region). Many graduates may be at a higher
level, depending on their degree and previous
work experience.
Deadline: the application is
projected to launch late
October/November 2007.
Further information on the PMF Program can be
found on the PMF website at:
