Women in the Legal Profession

A new study titled Women in the Profession: Findings from the First Wave of the After the JD Study is based on a survey of more than 4,500 individuals who passed their first Bar examination in the year 2000. The findings of this study were that while the experiences of women and men in the law were more alike than different overall, there were still key differences. Among some of the areas of difference reported were:

  • Women and men tend to practice in different legal markets and work settings.

  • Fewer women than men work in private law firms, where salaries tend to be higher than in other settings.

  • Women are less likely than men to be solo practitioners.

  • Women are considerably more likely than men to work in public interest, other nonprofit and legal service organizations, to serve as public defenders, and to work in educational institutions, where working conditions may be more flexible and salaries are generally lower.

  • The distribution of males and females varies by legal market as well as by work setting.

nalp Market information for Recent Graduates

According to the Association for Legal Career Professionals ("NALP"), the market is up for new law graduates. In fact, it is topping at 90% for the first time since the year 2000. As per NALP, the employment market for new law graduates has remained relatively strong and remarkably stable for the past decade, standing close to or above an 89% employment rate since 1997. However, NALP also states that a strong market does not necessarily mean that every new graduate started work at a large firm, or at a six-figure salary. In fact, 14% of salaries were either $135,000 or $145,000, while 42%, were $55,000 or less. Far more graduates started work in small firms of 50 or fewer lawyers or in non-firm settings (71% of those employed) than at firms of more than 100 lawyers (20% of those employed).

INTERNSHIP, clerkship & EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, DC

Summer Clerkship Program (2L, 3L, Alumni)

Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) is a leading Internet civil liberties organization, based in Washington, D.C.  EPIC focuses on civil liberties, privacy and freedom of expression, with special emphasis on emerging communication and information technologies. EPIC runs an outstanding Clerkship program during the summer, as well as both fall and spring semesters. Funded by a generous grant from the Glushko-Samuelson Foundation, the Internet Public Interest Opportunities Program (IPIOP) Clerkship provides extraordinary opportunities for hands-on experience with the legislative process and public interest litigation.  Clerks also benefit from weekly seminars led by eminent scholars and practitioners who work on Internet public interest issues.

Recent graduates can work at EPIC full-time if they can secure public interest funding.  There are various well known public interest fellowships, such as Equal Justice Works http://www.equaljusticeworks.org and Skadden http://www.skaddenfellowships.org with deadlines of September 18 and October 1, 2007, respectively.  Their work fits squarely into any reasonable definition of the "public interest"; in fact, much of EPIC's portfolio is explicitly understood as "human rights" work.

Applicants are invited to contact EPIC with potential projects and interests as soon as possible. For additional information and for applying to this program, please visit the EPIC website for instructions at http://epic.org/epic/jobs.html . Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2007.
