Graduate Opportunities

Office of the District Attorney,  Nassau County

ADA Career Opportunities

The Nassau County District Attorney's Office is one of the largest district attorney’s offices in the country with more than 175 lawyers and a total staff in excess of 370.  Situated on Long Island, immediately to the east of New York City, the office is committed to hiring the most qualified trial, investigative and appellate attorneys.

INTERVIEWING

Interviews are conducted from September to the end of April each year.  In addition to inviting candidates to the office, interviewers are sent to law schools in various parts of the country to recruit promising attorneys. All hiring is based on merit.  The interviewing process has three (3) stages:

Stage 1 - Consists of an interview with an assistant district attorney.
Stage 2 - Consists of a panel interview with two senior assistant district attorneys.
Stage 3 - Consists of an interview with the District Attorney. If the District Attorney extends an offer of employment to you and you accept it, then they conduct a complete investigation of your background. The offer is contingent on the results of that investigation.

Within 20 days of your interview, you will receive either a letter telling you that you have been advanced to the next interviewing stage, or a rejection letter.

To prepare for your first interview, please do the following:

  1. Read and sign the following forms in the Application Packet:
    1. Conditions of Employment
    2. Three-Year Commitment
    3. Political Activity by ADAs
    4. Gun Ownership
  2. Complete and sign the following forms:
    1. Applicant Questionnaire
    2. Applicant Information Sheet
  3. Prepare a Statement of Interest indicating why you want to work as a prosecutor and, specifically, in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.
  4. Provide two (2) copies of a writing sample. Choose a current issue in the criminal justice system about which you feel strongly and prepare a writing sample presenting your position on that issue. This is neither a research paper nor a legal brief, but a sample of your ability to:
    1. Recognize a significant issue in the criminal justice system;
    2. Adopt a specific, reasoned position on that issue;
    3. Articulate that position in a logical and persuasive manner.

This writing sample should be an original position paper and not an abstraction or adaptation of earlier research from law school assignments.  Submissions should be limited to three (3) double-spaced pages.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY CAREER AND SALARY PLAN

There are yearly salary increases determined by budgetary ability.  These increases are based on merit and responsibility.

Human Rights Watch Seeking 2 Full-Time Interns

Internship Description: Human Rights Watch ("HRW") has been working for seven years with the victims of Chad's exiled former President, Hissène Habré, to bring him to trial. In July 2006, at the request of the African Union, the President of Senegal, where Mr. Habré lives in exile, agreed to prosecute Mr. Habré. In January 2007, the Senegalese National Assembly adopted a new law which allows Senegalese courts to prosecute cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture, even when they are committed outside of Senegal, thus lifting the legal obstacles to Habré's trial in Senegal.

Human Rights Watch is seeking two full-time interns to assist with HRW's work on the case against Hissène Habré. Each internship duration will last four months. The interns will be supervised by HRW's Counsel in this matter, and will help HRW keep in touch with HRW's partners in Senegal and Chad, draft advocacy letters and press releases, monitor press and events and assist with research. The interns will also be responsible for administrative tasks, including filing, translating, accounting and helping staff and partners with travel arrangements.

This internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:  These internships are open to law students, law graduates and graduate students with expertise in international criminal law or international relations. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights and/or international criminal law. Oral and written fluency in French and English is required. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.

How to Apply: Please apply immediately by emailing a letter of interest in French, resume, names or letters of reference and a brief, unedited writing sample in French or English, (no calls or email inquiries, please) to gcd_ib2@hrw.org. Please use "Habré Internship Application - Spring 2009"as the subject of your email and specify your dates of availability. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Please visit http://www.hrw.org/justice/habre/ for more information.

The Equal Justice Works Debt Relief Online Resource Center

Equal Justice Works has launched a new web resource for students and educators regarding student debt. The College Cost Reduction and Access Act - legislation that forgives student debt and limits monthly loan payments - becomes fully effective on July 1, 2009. Signed into law nearly two years ago, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act ("CCRAA") will now help thousands of recent graduates cope with student debt and enter public service.

To help college graduates and their advisors understand, qualify and take advantage of benefits under the CCRAA, Equal Justice Works has developed a free online resource center that provides a comprehensive overview of its provisions, as well as many practical tools including simple checklists, calculators, lists of loan repayment assistance programs, FAQs and podcasts.

Reproductive Justice Writing Contest Hosted by the National Advocates for Pregnant Women

NAPW Law Student Writing Competition 2008-2009 Academic School Year

For all you law students out there, a fantastic reproductive justice writing contest is being hosted by the National Advocates for Pregnant Women ("NAPW"). They are giving out significant cash prizes, $1,000 for first prize, $500 and $250 for the runners up. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2009.

Issues of concern to pregnant and birthing women have often been missing from discussion in law school courses and among reproductive rights activists. Thanks in large part to public education efforts by writers, filmmakers and community activists, there is an unprecedented amount of attention and momentum surrounding the rights of pregnant and birthing women. To advance these efforts further, NAPW has developed two writing contests. NAPW and numerous co-sponsors and supporters (to be announced) hope that these contests will leverage the enthusiasm and creativity of a new generation of feminist legal scholars, and spark critical thinking about the need to address childbirth and birthing rights as constitutional and human rights issues.

The first contest asks for a critical analysis of the absence of birthing rights issues from gender discrimination and feminist jurisprudence textbooks and curricula. The second contest asks students to develop legal theories that can be used to challenge policies banning pregnant women from having a vaginal birth after a prior caesarean section ("VBAC"). This topic will encourage students to address a growing problem that has received very little attention from the feminist legal community, both in academia and within the leading women's rights legal advocacy organizations.

The National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair

The National Black Prosecutors Association ("NBPA") is hosting its Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the Marriot Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee.  The goal of the NBPA's Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a unique forum where law students, recent law graduates and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state and federal levels.

The NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization comprised of over 800 prosecutors. Their annual convention serves not only as a job fair forum, but as a comprehensive legal training program for prosecutors.  This year’s 26th annual conference will run from July 19, 2009 to July 25, 2009.

The Job Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and check-in; interviews commence at 9:00 a.m.  At the culmination of the Job Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and Convention attendees.  The reception will afford Job Fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors.  The Job Fair early registration fee for law students and 2009 law school graduates is $25.00; for laterals/licensed attorneys is $50.00.  After March 31st, the registration fee will be $50.00 for law students and 2009 graduates, and $75.00 for laterals/licensed attorneys.  After June 12th, the late registration fee will be $100.00 for law students and 2009 law school graduates, and $150.00 for laterals/licensed attorneys.

In addition to the Job Fair reception, all job fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled “Strategies for a Successful Interview”.  The seminar will take place on Monday, July 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Marriott Memphis Downtown, and will provide Job Fair participants with effective interviewing techniques.

Job Fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference.  Students and 2009 law school graduates are invited to attend Conference seminars for free.

However, other events such as luncheons, dinners and receptions, must be paid for separately.  For laterals/licensed attorneys who are members of the NBPA, the conference registration fee is $350.00.  For laterals who are not members of NBPA, the fee is $500.00.  The lateral registration fee includes all seminars, luncheons, dinners and receptions as well as the Job Fair.

To register for the Job Far, please complete an applicant registration form and submit it along with a resume and a check for the appropriate fee payable to the NBPA 26th Annual Conference. After March 1st, registration will also be available online with a credit card at www.blackprosecutors.org.

If lodging is needed, the Marriot Memphis Downtown has extended a special Job Fair rate for students of $79.00 per night for a double room for July 20th and July 21st.  The number of rooms available at this special rate is limited, so book early!  To make reservations, contact the Marriott Memphis Downtown directly at (901) 527-7300.  Only registered Job Fair participants will be able to take advantage of this rate.

Additional information about the NBPA and its conference is available at www.blackprosecutors.org.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Tamesha Keel in the Career Development Office (CDO") at tkeel@law.miami.edu.

The 5th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair

The 5th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair ("HDLJF") will be held August 7-8, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri. Students who are interested in becoming part of Kansas City’s dynamic legal community should strongly consider attending this event.  Students who will be returning to school in August, and those graduating in May, are eligible to attend the job fair, as employers will be interviewing for both summer and post-graduate positions.

The HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal associations and corporate legal departments coming together to encourage law students to practice law in Kansas City. The HDLJF is designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to both traditional and non-traditional legal employers. In addition, the event is a great way t to learn more about living in Kansas City.
