Sterling Education Services, Inc. is a non-profit continuing
legal education company that conducts seminars across the nation.
They are holding an Immigration Law and
Employer Compliance seminar in Fort Lauderdale
on March 31, 2009 and would like to offer five law students
scholarship-passes to this seminar as an
introduction to the company. The students get a day-long overview of

an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys.
Students must register before the seminar via phone or email. No
walk-ins will be allowed. Only current law students may take
advantage of these passes and MUST provide their student id
number or other proof of enrollment in order to register.
PLEASE NOTE: Their scholarship policy requires that recipients
provide credit card information at the time of registration to
secure their free pass. No charge will be made to the
card unless the registrant fails to attend the program and
does not notify us three business days in advance.
If a scholarship registrant should fail to show up at
the program, or cancel as described above, a $50.00 no-show fee will
be charged to the card provided. This policy has been

to use it while other students who would have like to have attended
were told the free slots had been filled. Registration for the
program will serve as agreement to this policy.

Reproductive Justice Writing Contest Hosted by the
National Advocates for Pregnant
Women
NAPW
Law Student Writing Competition 2008-2009 Academic School
Year
For all you law students out there, a fantastic
reproductive justice writing contest is being hosted by the National
Advocates for Pregnant Women ("NAPW"). They are giving out
significant cash prizes, $1,000 for first prize, $500 and $250 for
the runners up. The deadline for submissions
is May 31, 2009.
Issues of concern to pregnant and birthing women
have often been missing from discussion in law school courses and
among reproductive rights activists. Thanks in large part to public
education efforts by writers, filmmakers and community activists,
there is an unprecedented amount of attention and momentum
surrounding the rights of pregnant and birthing women. To advance
these efforts further, NAPW has developed two writing contests. NAPW
and numerous co-sponsors and supporters (to be announced) hope that
these contests will leverage the enthusiasm and creativity of a new
generation of feminist legal scholars, and spark critical thinking
about the need to address childbirth and birthing rights as
constitutional and human rights issues.
The first contest
asks for a critical analysis of the absence of birthing rights
issues from gender discrimination and feminist jurisprudence
textbooks and curricula. The second contest asks students to develop
legal theories that can be used to challenge policies banning
pregnant women from having a vaginal birth after a prior caesarean
section ("VBAC"). This topic will encourage students to address a
growing problem that has received very little attention from the
feminist legal community, both in academia and within the leading
women's rights legal advocacy organizations.

The National Association of Law Students With
Disabilities is Holding its Third Annual
Conference
The National
Association of Law Students With Disabilities
("NALSWD") is a coalition of law students dedicated
to disability advocacy and the achievement of equal access,
inclusion, diversity and non-discrimination in legal education and
the legal profession. The organization's goal is to assist
individuals in achieving their best employment potential by ensuring
that students receive the accommodations and cultivate the skills
they need to be successful members of the legal bar.
The 2008 conference
featured many prominent lawyers with disabilities. Our keynote
speaker was the Honorable Richard S. Brown, Chief Judge of the
Wisconsin Court of Appeals, and the only deaf judge in the
country. Andy Imparato, CEO of the American Association of
People with Disabilities; Acting Vice Chair Christine M. Griffin of
the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Olegario Cantos
VII of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division; and
Claudia Gordon of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are also
among the many lawyers with disabilities who spoke at the conference
and have continued to support NALSWD’s development.
NALSWD is seeking all
law students with disabilities, whether they have physical,
psychiatric, intellectual, learning or emotional
disabilities. NALSWD was formed to facilitate a sustained
community for law students with disabilities to seek support and
professional advice as they navigate law school and the legal
profession. In this vein, the former President of NALSWD is
now forming an affiliated Lawyers With Disabilities group,
thanks to a generous Hearne Leadership Grant from the American
Association of People With Disabilities ("AAPD").
Please visit the
website at www.nalswd.org to learn more about
NALSWD. At www.nalswd.org, students can learn
about opportunities to get involved with the organization, read
monthly newsletters, join the e-mail listserv, participate in the
burgeoning mentorship program, and learn about upcoming events and
career opportunities.
NALSWD's third annual
conference is scheduled to take place on August 7-9 in Washington
D.C. The conference is being held in conjunction with the
IMPACT Career Fair, the only national employer recruitment event for
law students with disabilities. NALSWD is also developing an
annual awards program for law schools and law firms that have shown
a commitment to advancing disability issues, access, and inclusion
in their institutions.
NALSWD invites
students to get involved right away by completing their online
registration form at http://www.nalswd.org/membershipform.php.

internship
and clerkship Opportunities for
STUDENTS
The National Tribal Court Clerkship
Program
The University of Colorado Law School ("CU") is
pleased to announce the National Tribal Court Clerkship Program for
the Summer 2009. Law clerks have aided federal and state
judges for more than a century by providing legal and administrative
assistance. Very few tribal judges, however, have enjoyed the luxury
of a law clerk’s services—mostly due to lack of financial resources.
With the advent of the National Tribal Court Law Clerk Program, we
hope this will change. Tribal Court judges need assistance over
the summer with substantive legal research and writing, and the goal
of this program is to send law students from around the country to
these courts for summer clerkships. Although the positions are
unpaid, students will be able to earn academic credit subject to
meeting the requirements set forth by the students’ law
schools. This summer there are three opportunities with tribal
courts.
Because this is a relatively new process for
tribal court judges, and because they have expressed a desire to
receive application materials in bundles rather than trickling in,
CU Law will be assisting the participating judges by collecting the
materials of interested students from around the country, bundling
them and forwarding the bundles to the participating
judges.
Opportunities/Postings
The Navajo Nation Supreme Court is looking for
two summer law clerks for
the summer of 2009 in Window Rock, Arizona through the Tribal Courts
Clerkship Program. Students do not need to be Native American Indian
to apply, but Native American students are encouraged to apply.
Students are eligible to receive academic credit, however the
clerkships are unpaid. The Court has a backlog of cases that
require a preliminary review and legal research, and also require a
clerk to draft bench memos, orders and opinions to be published
online in our reporters. Once the case is completed, the clerks
would assist in deliberation. Telecommuting is not an option
for clerks because the Associate Justices meet often and would like
the participation of the clerks in these meetings. It is also
beneficial for the student to receive direct feedback from the
judges so that the clerks may incorporate the Navajo fundamental law
into their work product. Work hours can be flexible,
though. The Navajo Supreme Court provides assistance with rent
to unpaid students receiving credit towards their program.
Arrangements can be made by the Court to help find a room for the
student to rent. If you are
interested in applying for this program, please e-mail a cover
letter, resume, writing sample and references to karent@colorado.edu no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009,
but address your materials to LaVerne H. Garnenez, Navajo Nation
Supreme Court, P O Box 520, Window Rock, Navajo Nation,
AZ 86515. Indicate “Navajo Nation Supreme Court
Application” in the subject line of your
e-mail. Karen Trojanowski at CU will be
collecting all of the applications through the Tribal Court
Clerkship Program, and will send them as one bundle to the Navajo
Nation Supreme Court. Please DO NOT send your
materials to the Court directly.
Fort Berthold District Court of the Three
Affiliated Tribes in New Town, North Dakota is looking for one part-time or full-time law clerk
for the summer of 2009. Students do not need to
be Native American Indian, but Native American Indian students are
encouraged to apply. Students are eligible to receive academic
credit, however the clerkships are unpaid. This court handles
civil, criminal and juvenile cases arising in the Reservation. The
court is currently dealing with civil jurisdiction cases that raise
complete issues on exhaustion of tribal remedies. The Court
also has a need for need for tribal code amendments (the code
governs conduct on the Reservation in all areas). New Town is
located along a large lake and fishing, swimming and boating is
available. It is likely that housing could be found for the student.
Telecommuting is not an option as the student will get a much better
experience by being on site, and by being mentored and supervised
directly by Judge Vance Gillette. If you
are interested in applying for this program, please e-mail a cover
letter, resume, writing sample and references to karent@colorado.edu no later than 5:00 p.m. MST on Wednesday, April
8th, but address your materials to Judge Vance Gillette,
Fort Berthold District Court of the Three Affiliated Tribes, PO Box
967, New Town, ND 58763. Indicate “Fort Berthold District
Court Application” in the subject line of your
e-mail. Karen Trojanowski at the
University of CU will be collecting all of the applications through
the Tribal Court Clerkship Program, and will send them as one bundle
to Fort Berthold District Court. Please DO
NOT send your materials to the Court directly.

The Earl Warren Legal Training Program and Civil
Rights Training Scholarships
The NAACP Legal
Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. ("LDF") was founded in 1940 under
the leadership of Thurgood Marshall. Although LDF's primary purpose
was to provide legal assistance to poor African Americans, its work
over the years has brought greater justice to all Americans.
The
Earl Warren Legal Training Program
Description:
In
1972, LDF created the Earl Warren Legal Training Program Inc. as a
separate not-for-profit corporation to expand assistance to
African-American law students dedicated to civil rights and public
interest work and to increase the number of African-American law
students and attorneys.
The Program carries the
distinguished name of the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,
Earl Warren. Chief Justice Warren believed strongly that African
Americans were being denied "equal and open access to the courts,"
and saw a need for lawyers who were "deeply and personally committed
to the needs of the community." In 1972, he graciously allowed the
Program to carry his name.
Earl
Warren Civil Rights Training Scholarships:
These
scholarships are awarded each year to 15-20 new students whose
community involvement activities and leadership qualities
demonstrate outstanding potential for training as civil rights and
public interest attorneys.
These awards are limited to U.S.
citizens, and preference is given to students who are entering their
first-year of full-time study. The scholarships are in the amount of
$3,000. They are renewable, provided funds are available and the
student remains in good standing and fulfills all Program
requirements.
Eligibility
Criteria:
The
Earl Warren Civil Rights Training Program scholarships are
competitive. Only college graduates with good academic records,
outstanding community service and strong recommendations, are
considered. Preference is given to applicants who have a well
defined interest in civil rights and community service.
Earl
Warren scholarship winners share most of the following:
-
Exceptional academic promise and leadership potential -
Outstanding undergraduate academic records - Strong
recommendations from professors and employers - Desire to use
their education to benefit others - Remarkable self-confidence
& self-awareness - Mature, well-considered career
aspirations - Unique abilities, qualities and views -
Commitment to serve family, community or nation - Financial
need
How To
Apply:
Applications for The
Earl Warren Legal Training Program are not available through the
website, and may not be requested by email or by telephone.

in the practice of law, and to provide a networking forum for legal
employers and minority law students. The job
fair continues to be a great success. Last year the students who
attended each interviewed with an average of four employers.
The registration deadline is May 15,
2009.

The National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job
Fair
The
National Black Prosecutors Association ("NBPA") is hosting its
Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the Marriot Memphis
Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. The goal of the NBPA's Job
Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a
unique forum where law students, recent law graduates and
experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview
with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state and
federal levels.
The
NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization
comprised of over 800 prosecutors. Their annual convention
serves not only as a job fair forum, but as a comprehensive legal
training program for prosecutors. This year’s 26th
annual conference will run from July 19, 2009
to July 25, 2009.
The
Job Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and check-in;
interviews commence at 9:00 a.m. At the culmination of the Job
Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and
Convention attendees. The reception will afford Job Fair
attendees an additional opportunity to further network with
prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. The Job
Fair early registration fee for law students and 2009 law school
graduates is $25.00; for laterals/licensed attorneys is
$50.00. After March 31st, the registration fee will
be $50.00 for law students and 2009 graduates, and $75.00 for
laterals/licensed attorneys. After June 12th, the
late registration fee will be $100.00 for law students and 2009 law
school graduates, and $150.00 for laterals/licensed attorneys.
In
addition to the Job Fair reception, all job fair participants are
invited to attend a free career seminar entitled “Strategies for a Successful
Interview”. The seminar will take place on Monday,
July 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Marriott
Memphis Downtown, and will provide Job Fair participants with
effective interviewing techniques.
Job
Fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference.
Students and 2009 law school graduates are invited to attend
Conference seminars for free.
However, other events
such as luncheons, dinners and receptions, must be paid for
separately. For laterals/licensed attorneys who are members of
the NBPA, the conference registration fee is $350.00. For
laterals who are not members of NBPA, the fee is $500.00. The
lateral registration fee includes all seminars, luncheons, dinners
and receptions as well as the Job Fair.
To
register for the Job Far, please complete an applicant registration
form and submit it along with a resume and a check for the
appropriate fee payable to the NBPA 26th Annual
Conference. After March 1st, registration will also be
available online with a credit card at www.blackprosecutors.org.
If
lodging is needed, the Marriot Memphis Downtown has extended a
special Job Fair rate for students of $79.00 per night for a double
room for July 20th and July 21st. The
number of rooms available at this special rate is limited, so book
early! To make reservations, contact the Marriott Memphis

The 5th Annual
Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair
The 5th
Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair ("HDLJF") will be held
August 7-8, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri. Students who are

event is a great way t to learn more about living in Kansas
City.

off with an evening Welcome Reception on Friday, August 7th at the
