Fall 2008
Recruiting Information
Fall recruiting involves a number of different opportunities including the
Fall OCI, Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs, off campus job fairs,
government honors programs and fellowship applications.
Despite the name, fall recruiting often begins in
late spring so be sure to review the following information so that you do
not miss any important deadlines.
On-Campus
Interview Program ("OCI")
Every fall beginning in August, law firms, corporations and government
agencies come on campus to interview 2L and 3L law students for summer
associate positions and permanent placement after graduation,
respectively. In order to participate in OCI, you need to submit the
necessary materials requested by each employer (i.e. resume, writing sample,
transcript, etc.) by the specific deadline. CPC advisors are available all
summer, in person by email and phone, to discuss which employers you should
target and to assist you in updating your resume in a timely manner. All
correspondence involving the Fall OCI program will be provided via email to
the email address you have listed on Symplicity and many emails will be sent
over the summer providing you with bidding instructions and deadline
reminders. Be sure to check your email regularly so that you do not miss
any important information.
The Fall OCI program will take place in two phases.
Phase I: Phase I of OCI is open
exclusively to those employers who are members of NALP
(www.nalpdirectory.com).
Bidding for Phase I of OCI will take place from
Tuesday, July 1 through Monday, July 14 via Symplicity.
Interviews for Phase I will take place from Monday,
August 11 through Friday, August 15. Please note that some of
the employers participating in Phase I of OCI will host receptions for those
students selected to interview. These receptions generally take place at
the firm the night before the firm’s interviews although some receptions may
take place the week before. These receptions are an important aspect of the
interview process so please remember this while making your travel plans for
the summer.
Phase II: Phase II of OCI will
include a wide variety of employers including large, mid-size and small
firms, government agencies, public interest employers and corporations.
Bidding will take place in August with interviews taking place from
Monday, September 8 through Friday, October 31.
The specific bidding dates will be provided to you over the summer.
In conjunction
with the OCI program, the CPC also administers its Resume Referral and
Direct Contact programs. These programs feature employers who would like to
receive applications from University of Miami School of Law students but are
unable to come on campus. More information about these programs will be
available this summer.
Job Fair Information - 2008
University of Miami School of Law participates in
numerous job fairs with other law schools and organizations. These programs
give students increased access to a broad range of employers, and help
accommodate employers unable to travel to University of Miami School of Law
for on-campus interviews. Students interested in getting exposure to
employers outside of Florida should consider attending job fairs. Some job
fairs require you to register and apply through the CPC, while others allow
you to apply directly to the job fair. All job
fairs have strict deadlines that must be adhered to. Please
review the job fairs available to you and make note of any deadlines. For
more information, please contact the advisor listed for a particular job
fair.
Pre-Registration:
For some job fairs you will be required to pre-register with the CPC in
order to receive important information including participating employers and
deadlines. Pre-registration does not mean you are committing to
participating in and attending the job fair. Rather, pre-registration
simply means that you are interested in receiving materials about the job
fair and are considering applying. To pre-register to receive job fair
information, please submit a pre-registration form to the CPC.
Pre-registration forms will be available in the CPC starting April 1st.

Announcing the
Federal Service Student Ambassadors
Announcing: The Federal Service
Student Ambassadors
WHAT:
The Federal Service Student Ambassadors, sponsored by the
nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, Partnership for Public Service, is
designed to increase interest in federal service on college campuses through
developing a corps of passionate student advocates (you!) who will actively
promote public service following their completion of a summer federal
internship.
WHEN:
Ambassadors will return to campus following their internship ready to lead
major outreach efforts to their campus community during the 2008-2009 school
year. Apply soon because applications will be reviewed as they are received!
WHY:
Our government is facing a crisis: In the next five years, nearly one-third
of the 1.9 million federal employees will be eligible for retirement. In
order to meet the challenges that we face as a nation, it is critical that
we have talented and skilled applicants that want to make a difference in
our country by applying to be a part of the federal workforce.
BONUS!
Ambassadors will attend a dynamic training in July in Washington, DC with
nine other Ambassadors from universities across the country. Ambassadors
will also receive regular feedback and assistance from staff members in
Washington, DC as well as from their school and fellow Ambassadors. They
will also receive a $2,200 stipend for their service.
Ambassadors will have an experience to add to their resume that really sets
them apart from other applicants. They will lead a major outreach effort on
their campus, meeting with faculty and staff, writing articles for
newspapers and magazines, and educating their campus communities about
opportunities in the federal government.
WHO:
The Partnership is seeking Ambassadors for the 2008-2009 school year who
will be participating in an internship with a federal agency in Washington,
DC for the summer of 2008. Ideal candidates will possess strong
interpersonal and communications skills, demonstrate a commitment to public
service and be actively involved in leadership roles and/or extracurricular
activities.
HOW:
For more information regarding this opportunity, including a full position
overview, qualifications, and application instructions, download the
application at
http://www.makingthedifference.org/index.shtml. For more information,
please contact:
Caroline Pettit at

CLINICAL TEACHING
FELLOWSHIP - COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CLINIC
FORDHAM LAW SCHOOL, NYC

Community Economic Development ("CED") Clinic is initiating a Teaching
Fellowship. The Fellow will work with experienced CED practitioner Brian
Glick. S/he will help supervise students in client representation and

Clinic represents New York City groups fighting for social justice in
low-income communities of color and low-wage, predominantly immigrant
workforces. As their general counsel, the clinic helps sustain effective
organizations and build institutions- health clinics, childcare centers,
worker-owned enterprises- that empower their participants while providing
desperately needed services and opportunities. The clinic supports
neighborhood efforts to shape development, limit gentrification and win
community benefits agreements. It also assists small grassroots groups with
incorporation, bylaws and tax exemption. Students learn transactional
business lawyering in a nonprofit social justice setting.
They seek an
attorney with at least two years’ experience, preferably more, who is
interested in pursuing a career in clinical teaching. Spanish fluency and
transactional or social lawyering experience preferred. The fellow will

Intern Program
NEW FOR 2008-2009!
There are exciting new developments in the
Attorney General’s Honors Program and Summer Law
Intern Program!
Highlights include:
An earlier application deadline and a faster
review and selection process.
- Don’t miss the
September 2, 2008 application
deadline.
- Candidates selected for Honors Program ("HP")
interviews will be notified on or about
September 19, 2008. Summer Law Intern Program
("SLIP") candidates will be notified on or about
September 23, 2008.
- Government-funded HP interviews will be
scheduled October 6-20, 2008. SLIP interviews,
mostly telephonic, will begin following
notification.
- Most offers will be issued by late October.
Four United States Attorneys’ Offices ("USAO"s)
and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys ("EOUSA")
are formal HP participants this year, hiring
approximately 16 entry-level attorneys.
Applicants interested in becoming an Assistant
U.S. Attorney ("AUSA") will be able to designate
the “U.S. Attorney’s Office” as one of their
employment preferences, then, later in the
application, select the specific offices. Due to
the level of responsibility held by AUSAs, these
opportunities are only available to applicants
who are admitted to a bar or, in some cases, who
have taken a summer 2008 bar examination with
results due in fall 2008. Current law students
(pre-J.D.) are not eligible. Participating USAOs
are:
- The Central District of California, Los
Angeles, CA.
- The Southern District of California, San
Diego, CA.
- The Western District of Michigan, Grand
Rapids, MI.
- The Middle District of Florida, Orlando, FL.
- EOUSA, Washington, D.C., with possible
assignments nationwide.
The USAO for the District of Wyoming is the very
first USAO to become a formal SLIP participant
and it is offering a position in one of the
Nation’s most scenic national parks. Hiring for
Cheyenne, WY, or Mammoth Hot Springs in
Yellowstone National Park, the Summer Intern
will assist with criminal and civil cases in
U.S. District Court in Cheyenne or will assist
in the prosecution of a range of misdemeanors in
Yellowstone National Park.
Civil Division applicants will be able to
designate specific sections of interest.
Executive Office of Immigration Review
applicants will be able to designate geographic
areas of preference by city and state, and
comment on any geographic restrictions on their
assignment.
The Honors Program application has been expanded
to permit applicants serving in post-J.D. legal
fellowships to apply online on a conditional
basis. OARM will determine whether an exception
to policy will be granted on a case-by-case
basis.

The National Black
Prosecutors Association To Host its Job
Fair on July 14, 2008
The National Black
Prosecutors Association
("NBPA") will host its
Job Fair on
Monday, July 14, 2008
at the Broward County
Convention Center in
Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The NBPA invites all
interested law students,
alumni and practicing
attorneys to attend
this year's Job Fair.
The Job Fair's goal is
to promote diversity in
prosecutors' offices by
providing a forum where
prospective employers
can easily access highly
qualified minority
candidates nationwide.
The Job Fair begins at
8:00 a.m. with
registration and
check-in; interviews
begin at 9:00 a.m. At
the culmination of the
Job Fair, there will be
a reception for all Job
Fair participants and
Convention attendees.
The reception will
afford Job Fair
attendees an additional
opportunity to further
network with prospective
employers and
experienced
prosecutors.
In addition to the Job
Fair reception, all Job
Fair participants are
invited to attend a free
career seminar entitled,
"Strategies for a
Successful Interview."
The seminar will take
place on Sunday, July
13th from 4:00 p.m. to
6:00 p.m. at the
Hilton Fort Lauderdale
Beach Resort, and will
provide Job Fair
participants with
effective interviewing
techniques.
Moreover, Job Fair
attendees are welcome to
attend the entire
conference. Students
and 2008 law graduates
are invited to attend
Conference seminars for
free. However, other
events, such as
luncheons, dinners and
receptions must be paid
for separately.
For the law students and
2008 law graduates who
register by Friday, June
6, 2008, the CPC will
pay the $50.00
registration fee.
Additional information
about the NBPA Job Fair
and Conference,
including applicant
registration forms and a
list of this
year's participating
employers, is

The Boston/DC Lawyers
Group Job Fairs (2L, 3L)
The Boston Lawyers
Group ("BLG") is
a consortium of over
40 of the largest
law
firms, government
agencies and
corporations in the
City of Boston. Its
mission is to
promote the
hiring, retention
and professional
development of
attorneys of color
in the member
organizations. A
primary goal of the
BLG is to
increase the number
of law students of
colorwhom
member organizations
hire for their
Boston
location. One of the
significant ways in
which this goal
is accomplished is
through member
participation in the
annual BLG Boston
Job Fair. Employers
who participate in
the job fair hire
for positions in
their Boston office.
Employers will be
interviewing
second-year law
students for 2009
summer associate/law
clerk positions and,
in a limited number
of cases, employers
will
interview third-year
law students for
Fall 2009
first-year associate
positions. Second
and third year law
students of
color are welcome
and encouraged to
participate in
the fair.
Please note:
Although the
BLG runs a job
fair in Washington,
DC and Boston, MA,
students can
participate in only one
fair.
Registration is now
open until July 11,
2008.
The Boston Job Fair
will be held on
August 15, 2008 at
the
Intercontinental Hotel
in Boston, MA. The
DC Job Fair will be
held on Thursday,
August 21, 2008 at
the Renaissance
Mayflower Hotel in
Washington, DC.
More details for
both job fairs,
including
registration, can

at: http://www.thebostonlawyersgroup.com/events/.
The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal
Career Fair
The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal
Career Fair ("RMDLCF"), which will
be held on
Friday, September 12, 2008,
in Denver, Colorado, provides an
excellent forum for legal employers,
law students and recent law school
graduates to meet and discuss
employment options. Legal employers
attending the RMDLCF seek to hire
law students and recent graduates
from culturally diverse
backgrounds who have been
traditionally under-represented in
the practice of law in the Rocky
Mountain region. These include law
students and graduates who are
ethnic or racial minorities,
disabled, and/or gay, lesbian,

Online
registration will be available
