UPCOMING PROGRAMS & EVENTS

Fall 2008 OCI Program

Every fall, beginning in August, law firms, corporations and government agencies come on campus to interview 2L, 3L and LL.M. students for summer associate positions and permanent placement after graduation, respectively. This program is called the Fall On Campus Interview ("OCI") program and is open to all 2L, 3L and LL.M. students at the University of Miami School of Law. The 2008 Fall OCI program will take place in two phases. Each phase will feature different employers interviewing on campus. Phase I will consist solely of employers who are members of the NALP organization (www.nalpdirectory.com). Phase II will feature large and mid-sized firms as well as corporations, government agencies and public interest organizations.

Phase I of the Fall 2008 OCI program will take place from Monday, August 11, 2008 through Friday, August 15, 2008. To participate, you must complete the bidding process via the Symplicity system located at http://law-miami-csm.symplicity.com/students. All students have an account on Symplicity. If you did not receive your login information, please email dijones@law.miami.edu and provide your full name, graduation month/year, Cane I.D. and email address (this email address will be your username for the site). You will then receive your login information via email. Please allow up to two business days for a response.

Bidding for Phase I employers will take place from Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. EST to Monday, July 14, 2008 at 11:00 p.m. EST. Students are only able to submit bids for those employers accepting applications from their class year or LL.M. program. Prior to bidding, students should carefully review each employer’s information as some employers may have specific bidding instructions that must be followed.

**Attention 3L and LL.M. students: Please note that there are very few employers participating in Phase I of the Fall OCI program who are accepting applications from 3L and LL.M. students as firms in this phase are most focused on 2L hiring. Please be certain to participate in Phase II of the Fall OCI program as well as the Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs, as these programs feature more employers accepting applications from 3L and LL.M. students. Please see below for information on these programs.**

To help you through the bidding process, the CPC is providing you with detailed instructions on both the OCI program and the Symplicity system. The Fall 2008 On Campus Interview (OCI) Program Handbook is available at http://www.law.miami.edu/cpc/cpc_03_07.php?op=3.

Please take the time to read the Handbook to acclimate yourself with the Fall OCI process and the Symplicity system. For information related to the OCI program, please read the "General Information" section and FAQs. For specific instructions on how to view participating employers and bid using Symplicity, please read the "Student Guide to Symplicity." Reading this information before bidding will answer most of the questions you have, will minimize any problems you may encounter with the system and will make the bidding process much easier for you.

For more information on other opportunities available during the fall recruitment process, please view the entire Handbook online.

Hard copies of the Handbook are available in the CPC and can be mailed to you. To request a copy of the Handbook, please email npierrelouis@law.miami.edu with your mailing address.

Phase II of the Fall 2008 OCI program will take place from Monday, September 8, 2008 through Friday, October 31, 2008. Registration for Phase II will begin on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. EST and conclude Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 11:00 p.m. EST. Information about Phase II will be available in August.

In conjunction with the Fall OCI program, the CPC will administer its Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs. More information about these programs will be available later this month.

Please continue to check the Symplicity program and your email account for Fall OCI updates, including participating employers. For questions about the Fall OCI program, please email Nirva Pierre-Louis at npierrelouis@law.miami.edu.

LexisNexis Searches Can Help You During OCI Bidding!

LexisNexis is providing searches for helpful information on select firms interviewing during Fall OCI Phase I. To access the search function, please log onto your Lexis account.  The Lexis searches will not only search the Martindale directory, but also news articles from the past five years. Once you get search results, you can always FOCUS or "Edit Search to get more targeted or different results (example: specific city or attorney). Use LexisNexis before your interviews, and prepare to impress!

Sterling Education Services Offering Scholarship Passes to Landlord/Tenant Law Seminar

Sterling Education Services is a non-profit continuing legal education company that conducts CLE seminars across the nation. They are holding a Landlord-Tenant Law seminar in Miami, FL on  August 8, 2008 and are offering five law students scholarship-passes to this seminar as an introduction to the company in the hope that when students graduate, they will attend their seminars as paying customers. The students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law, a seminar manual, and they also get an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys. It is a win-win situation.

PLEASE NOTE: The scholarship policy requires that recipients provide credit card information at the time of registration to secure their free pass. No charge will be made to the card unless the registrant fails to attend the program or cancel within three business days of the seminar. If a scholarship registrant should fail to show up at the program or cancel as described above, a $50.00 no-show fee will be charged to the card provided. Registration for the program will serve as agreement to this policy. The company has adopted this policy to avoid the losses associated with scholarship attendees failing to attend a program or cancel within a reasonable period of time.

The five free passes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis regardless of the school attended. After the five passes have been allocated, additional passes may be available for $50.00 per attendee. Up to five law students who identify themselves as such and pre-register for this seminar will be Sterling's guests. Students must register before the seminar. No walk-ins will be allowed. Only current law students may take advantage of these passes and  MUST provide their student id number or other proof of enrollment in order to register. Further information about the company can also be found on their website:http://www.sterlingeducation.com/

PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER STUDENTS ON THE WEBSITE!!!!

Job Fair Information - 2008

University of Miami School of Law participates in numerous job fairs with other law schools and organizations.  These programs give students increased access to a broad range of employers, and help accommodate employers unable to travel to University of Miami School of Law for on-campus interviews.  Students interested in getting exposure to employers outside of Florida should consider attending job fairs.  Some job fairs require you to register and apply through the CPC, while others allow you to apply directly to the job fair.  All job fairs have strict deadlines that must be adhered to.  Please review the job fairs available to you and make note of any deadlines.  For more information, please contact the advisor listed for a particular job fair.

Pre-Registration:  For some job fairs you will be required to pre-register with the CPC in order to receive important information including participating employers and deadlines.  Pre-registration does not mean you are committing to participating in and attending the job fair.  Rather, pre-registration simply means that you are interested in receiving materials about the job fair and are considering applying.  To pre-register to receive job fair information, please submit a pre-registration form to the CPC.  Pre-registration forms will be available in the CPC starting April 1st.

Clinical Teaching Fellowship -Community Economic Development Clinic

CLINICAL TEACHING FELLOWSHIP - COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CLINIC

FORDHAM LAW SCHOOL, NYC

Fordham’s Community Economic Development ("CED") Clinic is initiating a Teaching Fellowship.  The Fellow will work with experienced CED practitioner Brian Glick.  S/he will help supervise students in client representation and co-teach the CED Clinic seminar and is expected to participate actively in the life of the clinical program and law school.  This is a two- year fellowship.  The goal is to have Fordham's first Fellow start by mid-August, 2008, although a later start could be arranged.

Fordham’s CED Clinic represents New York City groups fighting for social justice in low-income communities of color and low-wage, predominantly immigrant workforces.  As their general counsel, the clinic helps sustain effective organizations and build institutions- health clinics, childcare centers, worker-owned enterprises- that empower their participants while providing desperately needed services and opportunities.  The clinic supports neighborhood efforts to shape development, limit gentrification and win community benefits agreements.  It also assists small grassroots groups with incorporation, bylaws and tax exemption.   Students learn transactional business lawyering in a nonprofit social justice setting.

They seek an attorney with at least two years’ experience, preferably more, who is interested in pursuing a career in clinical teaching.  Spanish fluency and transactional or social lawyering experience preferred.  The fellow will receive a stipend commensurate with his/her experience, plus full benefits and support for attending trainings and conferences.

To apply, please e-mail a resume and letter of interest to cedfellowship@law.fordham.edu.  Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

For further information, contact Johanna Jutres, johannajutres@law.fordham.edu, 212-636-7058.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS

Latham Diversity Scholars Program

Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that the application process is now open for the Latham Diversity Scholars Program. For the fourth consecutive year, the firm will be awarding a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of four second-year law students for use during their third year at ABA-accredited law schools (2009-10).. Students are asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 15, 2008.  The application form and instructions can be found on the firm’s Web site at www.lw.com/diversity under the Diversity Scholars Program heading

Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars include a candidate’s:

·          Ability and commitment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms,

·          Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including

any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession,

·          Academic and leadership achievements, and

·          Desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham & Watkins. Rather, it is open to all law students and is designed to encourage greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms as a way of benefiting the entire profession. Recipients will be announced in the early spring of 2009.

The Latham Diversity Scholars Program enhances Latham’s efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys. The firm’s ongoing initiatives include its annual Diversity Weekend attended by diverse law students receiving offers from the firm and a range of additional outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Sub-Committee.

Emory Law School Turner Environmental Law Clinic Fellowship

Emory Law School seeks applications for a Fellow position with the Emory Law School Turner Environmental Law Clinic for the 2008-09 school year. The Fellow would be involved in client representations and teaching students enrolled in the Clinic. The Fellow would serve under the Clinic's Interim Director. The Fellow must have a J.D. degree, excellent credentials, and ideally at least 2 years of practice experience. Experience in environmental law, litigation, regulatory practice, and Georgia bar admission are especially valuable, but are not required.

Send applications via email with a CV and writing sample attached, to Brenda Huffman, at bhuffman@emory.edu, with the subject line subject "Turner Fellow Application." Questions can be directed to Professor William Buzbee (wbuzbee@emory.edu) or Interim Clinic Director Larry Sanders (lsande3@emory.edu). Applications will be reviewed starting in mid-July.

The 2009 George V. Powell Scholarship Program (2L)

The 2009 George V. Attorney General's Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program

                                                                            NEW FOR 2008-2009!

There are exciting new developments in the Attorney General’s Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program!

Highlights include:

An earlier application deadline and a faster review and selection process.
- Don’t miss the September 2, 2008 application deadline.
- Candidates selected for Honors Program ("HP") interviews will be notified on or about September 19, 2008. Summer Law Intern Program ("SLIP") candidates will be notified on or about September 23, 2008.
- Government-funded HP interviews will be scheduled October 6-20, 2008. SLIP interviews, mostly telephonic, will begin following notification.
- Most offers will be issued by late October.

Four United States Attorneys’ Offices ("USAO"s) and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys ("EOUSA") are formal HP participants this year, hiring approximately 16 entry-level attorneys. Applicants interested in becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney ("AUSA") will be able to designate the “U.S. Attorney’s Office” as one of their employment preferences, then, later in the application, select the specific offices. Due to the level of responsibility held by AUSAs, these opportunities are only available to applicants who are admitted to a bar or, in some cases, who have taken a summer 2008 bar examination with results due in fall 2008. Current law students (pre-J.D.) are not eligible. Participating USAOs are:

- The Central District of California, Los Angeles, CA.
- The Southern District of California, San Diego, CA.
- The Western District of Michigan, Grand Rapids, MI.
- The Middle District of Florida, Orlando, FL.
- EOUSA, Washington, D.C., with possible assignments nationwide.

The USAO for the District of Wyoming is the very first USAO to become a formal SLIP participant and it is offering a position in one of the Nation’s most scenic national parks. Hiring for Cheyenne, WY, or Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, the Summer Intern will assist with criminal and civil cases in U.S. District Court in Cheyenne or will assist in the prosecution of a range of misdemeanors in Yellowstone National Park.

Civil Division applicants will be able to designate specific sections of interest.

Executive Office of Immigration Review applicants will be able to designate geographic areas of preference by city and state, and comment on any geographic restrictions on their assignment.

The Honors Program application has been expanded to permit applicants serving in post-J.D. legal fellowships to apply online on a conditional basis. OARM will determine whether an exception to policy will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE AT www.usdoj.gov/oarm FOR DETAILS!

The National Black Prosecutors Association To Host its Job Fair on July 14, 2008

The National Black Prosecutors Association ("NBPA") will host its Job Fair on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  The NBPA invites all interested law students, alumni and practicing attorneys  to attend this year's Job Fair.  The Job Fair's goal is to promote diversity in prosecutors' offices by providing a forum where prospective employers can easily access highly qualified minority candidates nationwide.

The Job Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and check-in; interviews begin at 9:00 a.m.  At the culmination of the Job Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and Convention attendees.  The reception will afford Job Fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors.

In addition to the Job Fair reception, all Job Fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled, "Strategies for a Successful Interview."  The seminar will take place on Sunday, July 13th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, and will provide Job Fair participants with effective interviewing techniques.

Moreover, Job Fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference.  Students and 2008 law graduates are invited to attend Conference seminars for free.  However, other events, such as luncheons, dinners and receptions must be paid for separately.

Additional information about the NBPA Job Fair and Conference, including applicant registration forms and a list of this year's participating employers, is available at www.blackprosecutors.org

The Boston/DC Lawyers Group Job Fairs (2L, 3L)

The Boston Lawyers Group ("BLG") is a consortium of over 40 of the largest law firms, government agencies and corporations in the City of Boston. Its mission is to promote the hiring, retention and professional development of  attorneys of color in the member organizations.  A primary goal of the BLG is to increase the number of law students of color whom member organizations hire for their Boston location. One of the significant ways in which this goal is accomplished is through member participation in the annual BLG Boston Job Fair.  Employers who participate in the job fair hire for positions in their Boston office.

Employers will be interviewing second-year law students for 2009 summer associate/law clerk positions and, in a limited number of cases, employers will interview third-year law students for Fall 2009 first-year associate positions.  Second and third year law students of color are welcome and encouraged to participate in the fair.

Please note: Although the BLG runs a job fair in Washington, DC and Boston, MA, students can participate in only one fair.

Registration is now open until July 11, 2008.  The Boston Job Fair will be held on August 15, 2008 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston, MA.  The DC Job Fair will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.

More details for both job fairs, including registration, can be found  athttp://www.thebostonlawyersgroup.com/events/.

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair ("RMDLCF"), which will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008, in Denver, Colorado, provides an excellent forum for legal employers, law students and recent law school graduates to meet and discuss employment options. Legal employers attending the RMDLCF seek to hire law students and recent graduates from culturally diverse backgrounds who have been traditionally under-represented in the practice of law in the Rocky Mountain region. These include law students and graduates who are ethnic or racial minorities, disabled, and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Online registration will be available on the RMDLCF's website from May 1 to July 28, 2008. Please visit www.rmdlcf.com for more information on the Career Fair.
