The Dallas Bar Association Minority Attorney Business Development Initiative

The Dallas Bar Association ("DBA") is continuing its program of recruiting minority law students for clerkships in Dallas area law firms. The program, known as the Minority Attorney Business Development Initiative ("MABDI") Minority Recruiting Program, was established to assist the participating law firms in recruiting from a larger pool of minority candidates, and to give minority students an opportunity to reach a greater number of firms in a systematic way.  The program has successfully given many students opportunities to clerk at Dallas law firms.  Following are the results from last year's program:

Participating Firms:  24
Participating Law Schools:  51
Schools with Students Responding:  25
Total 2L Applicants in the Top Half:  112

Eligible students (top 50% of 2L class ONLY) who have an interest in going to Dallas following graduation are invited to send resumes and transcripts, preferably via email, by August 20, 2009.  The student’s class standing/rank should be included in the resume. Along with their resumes and transcripts, students should send a brief cover letter explaining their ties to Dallas and/or their reasons for considering Dallas as a place to practice law following graduation from law school.  The documents should be sent via mail or email to:

                                                Ms. Sally Crawford

                                                Jones Day

                                                2727 North Harwood

                                                Dallas, TX  75201

                                                Phone:  214-969-2916

                                                Fax:  214-969-5100

                                                E-mail:  scrawford@jonesday.com

Student information received by August 20, 2009 will be sent to the participating law firms during the last week of August for review and consideration. Students should adhere to the deadline if possible since the firms will be receiving a large volume of resumes from students, and may already be in the interviewing process by that date.  The law firms will identify and contact the students they wish to interview.  The firms will work together with the students to coordinate interview schedules.

Those students who receive and accept offers from firms to work as summer associates in Dallas in 2010 may contact a MABDI committee member to discuss what is expected of summer associates in Dallas firms and to discuss what is expected of summer associates in Dallas firms and to discuss standards for success in a large firm environment.

Flyers with additional information regarding a detailed description of the program, a list of the law firms that have indicated that they plan to participate in the program this year and a Question & Answer sheet can be accessed via the Student Portal.

The Attorney General's Honors Program Presentation

The highly competitive Honors Program is the only way that the Department of Justice ("DOJ") hires entry-level attorneys. Selection for employment is based on many elements of a candidate's background, including academic achievement, law review or moot court experience, legal aid and clinical experience and summer or part-time legal employment. The DOJ also considers specialized academic studies (including undergraduate and post-graduate degrees), work experience and extracurricular activities that directly relate to the work of the Department.

A DOJ representative will be on campus on August 21, 2009, and will speak to students commencing at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Interested students please attend.

Attend the Judicial Clerkship Information Panel

The Career Development Office ("CDO") is hosting a Judicial Clerkship Information Panel on Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge. Panelists include federal judges and state court representatives who will discuss the benefits of a clerkship, as well as the factors they look for when hiring law clerks.
