UPCOMING PROGRAMS & EVENTS

OCI - Phase I Interviews

A.  preparing for the oci interview

How soon prior to my interview will I know the interviewer’s name so I can do research?
While some employers provide interviewer names early in the bidding process, others are unable to do so until shortly before the interview date. In addition, it is possible that the information provided will change on the day of the interview. Students should check the Symplicity system as interviewer names will be listed and updated as that information becomes available.

Where will the interview take place?
Interviews will take place in the CPC office or Law Library. For your interview location, please check Symplicity. For further instruction on how to view this information, please see the “Signing Up for Interviews” section of the Student Guide to Symplicity. You should also check in with the CPC front desk at least 10 minutes before your scheduled interview as interview locations can change.

How long are the interviews?
Most interviews are 20 minutes in length but on occasion employers elect to conduct longer interviews. The Symplicity system will let you know how long your interview will last.

B.  cancelling or rescheduling an interview

If I have a last minute emergency the day I am scheduled to interview can I make other arrangements with the firm to interview at another time and place?
Yes, only if it is a serious emergency. Otherwise, there is no acceptable reason to miss an
interview. The employer expects you to arrive for your interview as planned.

What constitutes an emergency?
Very serious issues such as death in the family, serious illness or hospitalization, car accident, etc. are considered emergencies. If you are unsure whether your situation can be deemed an emergency, please contact the CPC and speak to an advisor.

What is the appropriate attire to wear for an interview? What about jewelry, hair and footwear?
Make it a point to dress professionally at all times. Although some employers are less formal than others, the legal environment in general is extremely conservative and the CPC wants to assist you in making an excellent first impression. Be sure to take care of the basic hygiene requirements prior to your interview. Also, this is not the time to show the latest non-professional fashion trends.

Men: DO wear suits or slacks with a jacket, dress shirt and tie. Have a clean shave and
neat haircut.
DO NOT
wear shorts, jeans, or sneakers.

Women: DO wear suits (pants or skirts) or office dresses with a jacket. Hair, nails and make-up should be neat and fresh.
DO NOT
show bare arms, sleeveless tops (except under suit jacket), cleavage, glitter or excessive jewelry. No sundresses, shorts, or mini-skirts. No open-toe shoes.

The Fall 2007 OCI Handbook (Phase II) will be available in the CPC offices and online in August 2007.  If you have any questions, comments or problems, please contact Nirva Pierre-Louis at npierrelouis@law.miami.edu.

LexisNexis Searches Can Help You During OCI Bidding!

LexisNexis is providing searches for helpful information on select firms interviewing during Fall OCI Phase I. To access the search function, please log onto your Lexis account.  The Lexis searches will not only search the Martindale directory, but also news articles from the past five years. Once you get search results, you can always FOCUS or "Edit Search to get more targeted or different results (example: specific city or attorney). Use LexisNexis before your interviews, and prepare to impress!

Resume Referral/Direct Contact Bidding for Fall OCI

Each year, the CPC administers its Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs in conjunction with its Fall On Campus Interview ("OCI") Program.  Employers who recruit candidates through these programs are unable to interview on campus but would like to receive applications from interested students.  Both programs are administered via Symplicity.

Firms participating in the Resume Referral program require students to provide all requested materials (resumes, transcripts, etc.) to the CPC by placing a bid on Symplicity.  The CPC then forwards to employers the materials of interested students.  The employers will contact selected applicants directly.

Do not submit materials to Resume Referral employers on your own.  Resume Referral employers will only review materials provided by the CPC.

Direct Contact employers elect to have students send their applications directly to them.  However, all relevant information including hiring criteria, how to apply and submission deadlines will be available on Symplicity.  Typically there are more Resume Referral employers than Direct Contact employers.

Throughout the fall recruitment period, there will be several Resume Referral and Direct Contact sessions that have their own deadlines independent of the OCI session bidding deadlines.  Each session will be labeled by its deadline (i.e. Fall 2008 Resume Referral and Direct Contact Session (August 14, 2008)).  For your applications to Resume Referral employers to be submitted by the CPC, you must submit your bid by the session deadline.  For your applications to Direct Contact employers to be considered by those employers, you must send your applications directly to the employers by the deadline provided on Symplicity.

As with OCI employers, you will only be able to see those employers accepting applications from your class year or LL.M. program.

The CPC will continue to add Resume Referral and Direct Contact employers as it receives them.  Therefore, it is to your benefit to check the various sessions on occasion to ensure that you have not missed any new employers.

For instructions on how to apply to Resume Referral and Direct Contact employers, please see the Student Guide to Symplicity which is available by visiting http://www.law.miami.edu/cpc/pdf/fall_oci_handbook/Section_II_Student_Guide_to_Symplicity.pdf.

Students Can Now Order Business Cards

Student Business Cards

The Career Planning Center is pleased to offer business cards to current students.  A business card is a simple and professional way to network with attorneys and provide important contact information.

To order your personal University of Miami School of Law business cards, please complete the Student Business Cards Order Form.  The Order Form provides two distinct professional options for you to choose for your business cards. The cards will be printed on ivory paper.  Any lines left blank on the Order Form will not appear on the card (e.g., if you do not have a fax number, leave that line blank).  Please proofread your order before submitting.  Once your order is submitted, a proof of your business card will be emailed or faxed to you for approval.

As noted on the Order form, business cards will be delivered to the Career Planning Center in Room A-112 approximately five working days after proof approval.

Cards can be ordered in sets of 250 for $30.00 or 500 for $35.00.   Please make your selection on the Order Form.

Sterling Education Services Offering Scholarship Passes to Landlord/Tenant Law Seminar

Sterling Education Services is a non-profit continuing legal education company that conducts CLE seminars across the nation. They are holding a Landlord-Tenant Law seminar in Miami, FL on  August 8, 2008 and are offering five law students scholarship-passes to this seminar as an introduction to the company in the hope that when students graduate, they will attend their seminars as paying customers. The students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law, a seminar manual, and they also get an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys. It is a win-win situation.

PLEASE NOTE: The scholarship policy requires that recipients provide credit card information at the time of registration to secure their free pass. No charge will be made to the card unless the registrant fails to attend the program or cancel within three business days of the seminar. If a scholarship registrant should fail to show up at the program or cancel as described above, a $50.00 no-show fee will be charged to the card provided. Registration for the program will serve as agreement to this policy. The company has adopted this policy to avoid the losses associated with scholarship attendees failing to attend a program or cancel within a reasonable period of time.

The five free passes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis regardless of the school attended. After the five passes have been allocated, additional passes may be available for $50.00 per attendee. Up to five law students who identify themselves as such and pre-register for this seminar will be Sterling's guests. Students must register before the seminar. No walk-ins will be allowed. Only current law students may take advantage of these passes and  MUST provide their student id number or other proof of enrollment in order to register. Further information about the company can also be found on their website at http://www.sterlingeducation.com/.

PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER STUDENTS ON THE WEBSITE!!!!

WORKING IN DALLAS, TEXAS AFTER

LAW SCHOOL?

You are invited to participate in the Dallas Bar Association's program to recruit minority law students in the top half of

their class for 2009 clerkships with major established firms in Dallas. The Dallas Bar Association has worked with the major law firms in Dallas over the last several years to enhance recruiting of minority law students to the Dallas area.  This Minority Attorney Business Development Initiative ("MABDI" Project) was established to assist the participating law firms in recruiting from a larger pool of minority candidates and to do so in a systematic way.

Some of this year's participating firms are:

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP

Andrews Kurth, LLP

Baker Botts, LLP

Baker & McKenzie, LLP

Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, L.L.P.

Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P.

Eligible students (top 50% of 2L class ONLY) who have an interest in the project and willingness to consider coming to Dallas following graduation are invited to send resumes and transcripts, preferably via email, by August 22, 2008.  Early applications are encouraged.  The student’s class standing/rank should be included in the resume.  Along with their resumes and transcripts, students should send a brief cover letter explaining their ties to Dallas and/or their reasons for considering Dallas as a place to practice law following graduation from law school.  The documents should be sent via mail or email to:

                                                Ms. Sally Crawford

                                                Jones Day

Student information received by August 22, 2008 will be sent to the participating law firms during the last week of August for review and consideration.  Students should adhere to the deadline if possible since the firms will be receiving a large volume of resumes from students and may already be in the interviewing process by that date.  The law firms will identify and contact the students they wish to interview.  The firms will work together with the students to coordinate interview schedules.

Those students who receive and accept offers from firms to work as summer associates in Dallas in 2009 may contact a MABDI committee member to discuss what is expected of summer associates in Dallas firms, and to discuss standards for success in a large firm environment.

Job Fair Information - 2008

The University of Miami School of Law participates in numerous job fairs with other law schools and organizations.  These programs give students increased access to a broad range of employers, and help accommodate employers unable to travel to University of Miami School of Law for on-campus interviews.  Students interested in getting exposure to employers outside of Florida should consider attending job fairs.  Some job fairs require you to register and apply through the CPC, while others allow you to apply directly to the job fair.  All job fairs have strict deadlines that must be adhered to.  Please review the job fairs available to you and make note of any deadlines.  For more information, please contact the advisor listed for a particular job fair.

Pre-Registration:  For some job fairs you will be required to pre-register with the CPC in order to receive important information including participating employers and deadlines.  Pre-registration does not mean you are committing to participating in and attending the job fair.  Rather, pre-registration simply means that you are interested in receiving materials about the job fair and are considering applying.  To pre-register to receive job fair information, please submit a pre-registration form to the CPC.  Pre-registration forms will be available in the CPC starting April 1st.

The Ruden McClosky Law Firm has created a Diversity Scholarship Program with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.  The mission of the Ruden McClosky Diversity Scholarship Program is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students, groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession, to attend law school and provide financial assistance to these students. The award is a $2,500.00 scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year.  Applicants must have completed one year of law school to be eligible.

Successful applicants will also be granted an interview for the Ruden Summer Associate Program.

Application deadline is August 1, 2008.

Application can be downloaded from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County web site, www.CFSarasota.org and see the Special Interest Scholarships page or visit http://www.cfsarasota.org/Default.aspx?tabid=263 .

The Greenwall Fellowship Program in Bioethics and Health Policy,

The Greenwall Fellowship Program in Bioethics and Health Policy, an interdisciplinary program sponsored jointly by Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, is offering interdisciplinary, two-year Fellowships for early-career legal scholars with outstanding potential. Appointments will begin in September 2009.

The Greenwall Fellowship uniquely combines opportunities for in-depth, mentored research and high-impact public service. Each Fellow will undertake an individualized program of independent research and writing, complemented by a public-service experience in a health policy setting of the Fellow’s choosing. Fellows will also enjoy ample opportunity for scholarly interaction (including participation in faculty research workshops) with a broad range of faculty at Georgetown (in the Law Center, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and the Philosophy Department) and at Johns Hopkins (in the Berman Institute of Bioethics, the Philosophy Department, the School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health), as well as with scholars at leading Washington “think tanks.” Past Fellows have moved on to faculty appointments at leading law schools, as well as high-profile positions in government (including a White House Fellowship and Congressional staff positions).

The stipend will be approximately $57,000 per year. No prior health law or bioethics experience is required. Please send a curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, a writing sample, undergraduate and graduate transcripts and a personal statement to: Dr. Ruth Faden, Greenwall Fellowship Program, c/o Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University, 100 N. Charles St., Suite 740, Baltimore, MD 21201. The personal statement should include a proposed agenda for scholarship or research (this need not be detailed, but you should articulate the core idea you would like to develop or the research question you want to investigate). It should also address: (1) unique dimensions of your background, (2) the evolution of your research and other professional interests, and (3) how the Greenwall Fellowship might contribute to your ability to fulfill your career aspirations.

The deadline for receipt of applications is December 12, 2008. For further information, please visit the Academic Training section of www.bioethicsinstitute.org.  Additional inquiries may be directed to fellows@jhsph.edu.

Latham Diversity Scholars Program

Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that the application process is now open for the Latham Diversity Scholars Program. For the fourth consecutive year, the firm will be awarding a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of four second-year law students for use during their third year at ABA-accredited law schools (2009-10).. Students are asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 15, 2008.  The application form and instructions can be found on the firm’s Web site at www.lw.com/diversity under the Diversity Scholars Program heading

Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars include a candidate’s:

·          Ability and commitment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms,

·          Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including

any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession,

·          Academic and leadership achievements, and

·          Desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham & Watkins. Rather, it is open to all law students and is designed to encourage greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms as a way of benefiting the entire profession. Recipients will be announced in the early spring of 2009.

The Latham Diversity Scholars Program enhances Latham’s efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys. The firm’s ongoing initiatives include its annual Diversity Weekend attended by diverse law students receiving offers from the firm and a range of additional outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Sub-Committee.

The 2009 Equal Justice Works Fellowship Applications Now available Online

The 2009 Equal Justice Works online application is now available at http://info.equaljusticeworks.org/fellowships.

 IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Review the application ASAP.  Prospective candidates should review the online application form as soon as possible to familiarize themselves with how it works and to consider the necessary items required to apply - the online application, the Certification Form (signed by both the candidate and the host organization), and up to two letters of recommendation.

Begin working on the application early The online application now offers two functions to create an application.   The Formatted Edit function will allow you to use spell check and special formatting such as bold text, bullets, and italics.  The Basic Edit function does not support spell check or any special formatting such as bold, italics or bulleted text.  Please use the Basic Edit function if your browser has any difficulty editing using the Formatted Edit.  The lack of formatting will not negatively affect consideration of applications.  There are character limits noted for each box, and character counts may differ between a word processing program and the application.  It is therefore important for candidates to paste the text into the application well in advance of the deadline to ensure that the text fits in the allotted space.

Hard copy documents must be received by September 16th. The deadline for submission of the application, which is done online, is 5 pm EDT on September 16th.  A signed Certification Form and up to 2 recommendation letter(s) must be received by Equal Justice Works no later than September 16th.  These items must be mailed or hand delivered.  Faxes and email will not be accepted.

If you have any questions, please email fellowships@equaljusticeworks.org.

The 2009 George V. Powell Scholarship Program (2L)

Powell Scholarship Program, sponsored by Lane Powell PC, will give a $7,500 scholarship toward tuition and expenses during the student's third year of law school and receive a 2009 summer associate in the firm's Seattle or Portland office.  Candidates must be 2L students in good standing at an ABA accredited law school.  Candidates in four year joint degree programs will be considered after their third year.

The firm is seeking candidates who will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and who have a demonstrated desire to work, live and eventually practice law in Seattle or Portland.  The firm will also consider each candidate's academic achievements and record of leadership abilities, community service and involvement in community activities.

GOVERNMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Attorney General's Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program

                                                                            NEW FOR 2008-2009!

There are exciting new developments in the Attorney General’s Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program!

Highlights include:

An earlier application deadline and a faster review and selection process.
- Don’t miss the September 2, 2008 application deadline.
- Candidates selected for Honors Program ("HP") interviews will be notified on or about September 19, 2008. Summer Law Intern Program ("SLIP") candidates will be notified on or about September 23, 2008.
- Government-funded HP interviews will be scheduled October 6-20, 2008. SLIP interviews, mostly telephonic, will begin following notification.
- Most offers will be issued by late October.

Four United States Attorneys’ Offices ("USAO"s) and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys ("EOUSA") are formal HP participants this year, hiring approximately 16 entry-level attorneys. Applicants interested in becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney ("AUSA") will be able to designate the “U.S. Attorney’s Office” as one of their employment preferences, then, later in the application, select the specific offices. Due to the level of responsibility held by AUSAs, these opportunities are only available to applicants who are admitted to a bar or, in some cases, who have taken a summer 2008 bar examination with results due in fall 2008. Current law students (pre-J.D.) are not eligible. Participating USAOs are:

- The Central District of California, Los Angeles, CA.
- The Southern District of California, San Diego, CA.
- The Western District of Michigan, Grand Rapids, MI.
- The Middle District of Florida, Orlando, FL.
- EOUSA, Washington, D.C., with possible assignments nationwide.

The USAO for the District of Wyoming is the very first USAO to become a formal SLIP participant and it is offering a position in one of the Nation’s most scenic national parks. Hiring for Cheyenne, WY, or Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, the Summer Intern will assist with criminal and civil cases in U.S. District Court in Cheyenne or will assist in the prosecution of a range of misdemeanors in Yellowstone National Park.

Civil Division applicants will be able to designate specific sections of interest.

Executive Office of Immigration Review applicants will be able to designate geographic areas of preference by city and state, and comment on any geographic restrictions on their assignment.

The Honors Program application has been expanded to permit applicants serving in post-J.D. legal fellowships to apply online on a conditional basis. OARM will determine whether an exception to policy will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE AT www.usdoj.gov/oarm FOR DETAILS!

The ABA Law Student Division Career Fair - August 7th in New York

The ABA Law Student Division Career Fair and Resume Review kicks off the Division's portion of the ABA Annual Meeting in New York. The event takes place at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square Hotel (1535 Broadway).

The second annual Career Fair is structured as a table-talk and resume submission event to provide law students an opportunity to learn more about each firm or agency, while actively gaining valuable career advice.  Legal employers will have tables where attendees can drop off resumes and meet representatives from law firms of all sizes, local, state and federal government agencies, military JAG, and public interest groups to discuss summer and new associate positions, as well as internships and volunteer opportunities. Law students can interact with legal employers without the typical stress of formal, sit-down interviews.

The Law Student Division's Career Fair also features a Resume Review component, with a panel of lawyers and legal recruiters available to critique resumes and offer suggestions to maximize impact and improve effectiveness.
