Law Student Passes for Upcoming
Seminar
Sterling Education Services, Inc. is
a non-profit continuing legal education company that conducts
seminars across the nation. We are holding an Enforcing Your Construction Lien
seminar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on June 10, 2009 and would like
to offer five law
students scholarship-passes
to this seminar as an introduction to their company. The
students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law,
a seminar manual, and they also get an opportunity to network with
practicing attorneys. This is a win-win situation.
Students must register before the
seminar via phone or email. No walk-ins will be allowed. Only
current law students may take advantage of these passes
and MUST provide their student id number or other proof of
enrollment in order to register.
The five free
passes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis regardless
of the school attended. After the five passes have been
allocated, additional passes are available for $50.00 each. All the
seminar details can be found on Sterling's website at www.sterlingeducation.com.
PLEASE NOTE:
Sterling's scholarship policy requires that recipients
provide credit card information at the time of registration to
secure their free pass. No
charge will be made to the card unless the
registrant fails to attend the program and does not notify the
company three business days in advance. If a scholarship
registrant should fail to show up at the program or cancel as
described above, a $50.00 no-show fee will be charged to the
card provided. This policy has been instituted to avoid students
securing a free pass and not choosing to use it while other students
who would have like to have attended were told the free slots had
been filled. Registration for the program will serve as agreement to
this policy.
For those students who wish to register, they may email or call

The National Association of Law Students With
Disabilities is Holding its Third Annual
Conference
The National
Association of Law Students With Disabilities
("NALSWD") is a coalition of law students dedicated
to disability advocacy and the achievement of equal access,
inclusion, diversity and non-discrimination in legal education and
the legal profession. The organization's goal is to assist
individuals in achieving their best employment potential by ensuring
that students receive the accommodations and cultivate the skills
they need to be successful members of the legal bar.
The 2008 conference
featured many prominent lawyers with disabilities. The keynote
speaker was the Honorable Richard S. Brown, Chief Judge of the
Wisconsin Court of Appeals, and the only deaf judge in the
country. Andy Imparato, CEO of the American Association of
People with Disabilities; Acting Vice Chair Christine M. Griffin of
the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Olegario Cantos
VII of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division; and
Claudia Gordon of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are also
among the many lawyers with disabilities who spoke at the conference
and have continued to support NALSWD’s development.
NALSWD is seeking all
law students with disabilities, whether they have physical,
psychiatric, intellectual, learning or emotional
disabilities. NALSWD was formed to facilitate a sustained
community for law students with disabilities to seek support and
professional advice as they navigate law school and the legal
profession. In this vein, the former President of NALSWD is
now forming an affiliated Lawyers With Disabilities group,
thanks to a generous Hearne Leadership Grant from the American
Association of People With Disabilities ("AAPD").
Please visit the
website at www.nalswd.org to learn more about
NALSWD. At www.nalswd.org, students can learn
about opportunities to get involved with the organization, read
monthly newsletters, join the e-mail listserv, participate in the
burgeoning mentorship program, and learn about upcoming events and
career opportunities.
NALSWD's third annual
conference is scheduled to take place on August 7-9 in Washington
D.C. The conference is being held in conjunction with the
IMPACT Career Fair, the only national employer recruitment event for
law students with disabilities. NALSWD is also developing an
annual awards program for law schools and law firms that have shown
a commitment to advancing disability issues, access, and inclusion
in their institutions.
NALSWD invites
students to get involved right away by completing their online
registration form at http://www.nalswd.org/membershipform.php.

Human Rights Watch Seeking 2 Full-Time
Interns
Internship Description: Human Rights Watch ("HRW") has been working for seven years
with the victims of Chad's exiled former President, Hissčne Habré,
to bring him to trial. In July 2006, at the request of the African
Union, the President of Senegal, where Mr. Habré lives in exile,
agreed to prosecute Mr. Habré. In January 2007, the Senegalese
National Assembly adopted a new law which allows Senegalese courts
to prosecute cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes
and torture, even when they are committed outside of Senegal, thus
lifting the legal obstacles to Habré's trial in Senegal.
Human Rights Watch is seeking two full-time interns to
assist with HRW's work on the case against Hissčne Habré. Each
internship duration will last four months. The interns will be
supervised by HRW's Counsel in this matter, and will help HRW keep
in touch with HRW's partners in Senegal and Chad, draft advocacy
letters and press releases, monitor press and events and assist with
research. The interns will also be responsible for administrative
tasks, including filing, translating, accounting and helping staff
and partners with travel arrangements. This
internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic
credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the
workings of an international human rights organization, close
supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and
international organizations and foreign and domestic government
officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and
special events relating to human rights. Students should check with
their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:
These internships are open to law students, law
graduates and graduate students with expertise in international
criminal law or international relations. Applicants should be
well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest
in international human rights and/or international criminal law.
Oral and written fluency in French and
English is required. Computer skills (i.e.,
Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.
How to
Apply: Please apply immediately by emailing
a letter of interest in
French, resume, names or letters of reference and a
brief, unedited writing sample in French or English, (no calls or
email inquiries, please) to gcd_ib2@hrw.org.

The 2010-2012 ABA SECTION OF TAXATION PUBLIC
SERVICE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The American Bar Association Section of Taxation
is pleased to announce that the application period for its Public
Service Fellowship program for 2010-2012 is now open. Applications must be received by August 1, 2009 to be
considered. Applicants selected for interviews will be
invited to attend the Section's meeting in Chicago on September
25-26, 2009, and asked to participate in interviews on September 26,
2009.
The Public Service Fellowship program, which
began in 2008, reflects the Section's desire to advance public
service efforts in tax law, and to foster a more fair and equitable
tax system. Pro Bono service has been an integral part of the
Section's activities for many years. The Section actively encourages
member participation in various Pro Bono efforts, holds
numerous training sessions to that end, and devotes many of its
resources to providing legal services to those in need. The Section
recognizes the need for funding and fostering recent law school
graduates or judicial clerks who wish to dedicate some portion of
their professional careers to public service in tax.

For Entries
Eligibility:
College or
university students — part-time or full-time, undergraduate or
graduate, from all nations and academic disciplines — are eligible.
Student applicants must be enrolled in a college or university in
Fall 2009, and must be no older than 35 years of age.
Junior
faculty members — must hold a position of Assistant Professor (or
equivalent) or higher, be not yet tenured, and 35 years or
younger.
Length
of Entries:
College or
university students —1,500 to 5,000 words.
Junior
faculty members — 5,000 to 8,000 words.
Style
Guidelines:
The judges
will look for clarity, rigor and eloquence. Papers need not be
technical or demonstrate hyper-specialized scholarship, although
they should be serious in content, tone and style. Papers may be
footnoted, but judges aren’t looking for the paper with the most
footnotes. All essays must be in English.
Judging
Standards:
All
identifying information is removed from the essays such that they
are judged blindly. Each essay is read and ranked by each of the
three academicians who comprise the panel of judges. After each
paper has been ranked, the judges’ results are combined to determine
which papers have the highest ranking.
Benefits:
In
addition to the monetary prizes (see other side), the Independent
Institute assists with placing the winning essays for publication in
prominent journals, on websites and through other outlets. Winners
may also be invited to speak at the Institute’s seminar series or
another forum. Winners’ names are advertised through the Institute’s
website, and in print ads appearing in prominent
publications.
Further
Information
The
Independent Institute has published a useful reading list on this
year’s theme. The official rules reading list, entry form, and
further information are available on the website: www.independent.org/students/essay.
You may also write for a copy of the reading list, entry form, and
guidelines.
Entry
Deadline and Formats
The deadline for entry is May 1, 2009.
All entries must be submitted as a text file or Microsoft Word
document through our website: www.independent.org/essay.
Winners
will be notified in September, 2009. Winning essays become the
property of the Independent Institute, which will, however,
cooperate fully with the authors in their republication
elsewhere.

The Equal Justice Works Debt Relief Online Resource
Center
Equal
Justice Works has launched a new web resource
for students and educators regarding student debt. The College Cost
Reduction and Access Act - legislation that forgives student debt
and limits monthly loan payments - becomes fully effective on July
1, 2009. Signed into law nearly two years ago, the College Cost
Reduction and Access Act ("CCRAA") will now help thousands of recent
graduates cope with student debt and enter public service.
To help
college graduates and their advisors understand, qualify and take
advantage of benefits under the CCRAA, Equal Justice Works has
developed a free online resource center that provides
a comprehensive overview of its provisions, as well as many
practical tools including simple checklists, calculators, lists of
loan repayment assistance programs, FAQs and podcasts.

Reproductive Justice Writing Contest Hosted by the
National Advocates for Pregnant
Women
NAPW
Law Student Writing Competition 2008-2009 Academic School
Year
For all you law students out there, a fantastic
reproductive justice writing contest is being hosted by the National
Advocates for Pregnant Women ("NAPW"). They are giving out
significant cash prizes, $1,000 for first prize, $500 and $250 for
the runners up. The deadline for submissions
is May 31, 2009.
Issues of concern to pregnant and birthing women
have often been missing from discussion in law school courses and
among reproductive rights activists. Thanks in large part to public
education efforts by writers, filmmakers and community activists,
there is an unprecedented amount of attention and momentum
surrounding the rights of pregnant and birthing women. To advance
these efforts further, NAPW has developed two writing contests. NAPW
and numerous co-sponsors and supporters (to be announced) hope that
these contests will leverage the enthusiasm and creativity of a new
generation of feminist legal scholars, and spark critical thinking
about the need to address childbirth and birthing rights as
constitutional and human rights issues.
The first contest
asks for a critical analysis of the absence of birthing rights
issues from gender discrimination and feminist jurisprudence
textbooks and curricula. The second contest asks students to develop
legal theories that can be used to challenge policies banning
pregnant women from having a vaginal birth after a prior caesarean
section ("VBAC"). This topic will encourage students to address a
growing problem that has received very little attention from the
feminist legal community, both in academia and within the leading
women's rights legal advocacy organizations.
Other questions
about the contest? Send Inquiries to: writingcontest@advocatesforpregnantwomen.org.

The National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job
Fair
The
National Black Prosecutors Association ("NBPA") is hosting its
Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the Marriot Memphis
Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. The goal of the NBPA's Job
Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a
unique forum where law students, recent law graduates and
experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview
with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state and
federal levels.
The
NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization
comprised of over 800 prosecutors. Their annual convention
serves not only as a job fair forum, but as a comprehensive legal
training program for prosecutors. This year’s 26th
annual conference will run from July 19, 2009
to July 25, 2009.
The
Job Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and check-in;
interviews commence at 9:00 a.m. At the culmination of the Job
Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and
Convention attendees. The reception will afford Job Fair
attendees an additional opportunity to further network with
prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. The Job
Fair early registration fee for law students and 2009 law school
graduates is $25.00; for laterals/licensed attorneys is
$50.00. After March 31st, the registration fee will
be $50.00 for law students and 2009 graduates, and $75.00 for
laterals/licensed attorneys. After June 12th, the
late registration fee will be $100.00 for law students and 2009 law
school graduates, and $150.00 for laterals/licensed attorneys.
In
addition to the Job Fair reception, all job fair participants are
invited to attend a free career seminar entitled “Strategies for a Successful
Interview”. The seminar will take place on Monday,
July 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Marriott
Memphis Downtown, and will provide Job Fair participants with
effective interviewing techniques.
Job
Fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference.
Students and 2009 law school graduates are invited to attend
Conference seminars for free.
However, other events
such as luncheons, dinners and receptions, must be paid for
separately. For laterals/licensed attorneys who are members of
the NBPA, the conference registration fee is $350.00. For
laterals who are not members of NBPA, the fee is $500.00. The
lateral registration fee includes all seminars, luncheons, dinners
and receptions as well as the Job Fair.
To
register for the Job Far, please complete an applicant registration
form and submit it along with a resume and a check for the
appropriate fee payable to the NBPA 26th Annual
Conference. After March 1st, registration will also be
available online with a credit card at www.blackprosecutors.org.
If
lodging is needed, the Marriot Memphis Downtown has extended a
special Job Fair rate for students of $79.00 per night for a double
room for July 20th and July 21st. The
number of rooms available at this special rate is limited, so book

The 5th Annual
Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair
The 5th
Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair ("HDLJF") will be held
August 7-8, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri. Students who are
interested in becoming part of Kansas City’s dynamic legal community
should strongly consider attending this event. Students who
will be returning to school in August, and those graduating in May,
are eligible to attend the job fair, as employers will be
interviewing for both summer and post-graduate
positions.
The
HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal
associations and corporate legal departments coming together to
encourage law students to practice law in Kansas City. The HDLJF is
designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to both
traditional and non-traditional legal employers. In addition, the
event is a great way t to learn more about living in Kansas
City.
The
