Search of Housing This Summer?
Every year, law students around the country spend
their summer in a different city. Finding housing for the summer is
one of the biggest challenges to spending a summer away. Below are
some resources that may help you if you are looking for housing this
summer:
1. The NALP Apartment Exchange allows
students to search for housing or post their own listing - all for
free. The NALP Apartment Exchange will be available from January 15th through May 15th. Free
registration is required to use the site.
2. Spending the
summer in NYC? The Educational Housing Services
("EHS") is a not-for-profit organization that provides safe and
affordable fully furnished housing to students, grad students and
interns coming to New York City. EHS manages multiple properties
throughout New York City and Brooklyn, and is a great short term
housing option that offers the opportunity to live in a community of
your peers. Pass the good news on, and earn $100 for each friend you
refer to EHS (that books a reservation). Also, this year EHS is
offering 10 FREE SUMMER HOUSING scholarships. Details can be found on the Career Development Office ("CDO")
Blog.

The National Association of Law Students With
Disabilities is Holding its Third Annual
Conference
The National
Association of Law Students With Disabilities
("NALSWD") is a coalition of law students dedicated
to disability advocacy and the achievement of equal access,
inclusion, diversity and non-discrimination in legal education and
the legal profession. The organization's goal is to assist
individuals in achieving their best employment potential by ensuring
that students receive the accommodations and cultivate the skills
they need to be successful members of the legal bar.
The 2008 conference
featured many prominent lawyers with disabilities. The keynote
speaker was the Honorable Richard S. Brown, Chief Judge of the
Wisconsin Court of Appeals, and the only deaf judge in the
country. Andy Imparato, CEO of the American Association of
People with Disabilities; Acting Vice Chair Christine M. Griffin of
the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Olegario Cantos
VII of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division; and
Claudia Gordon of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are also
among the many lawyers with disabilities who spoke at the conference
and have continued to support NALSWD’s development.
NALSWD is seeking all
law students with disabilities, whether they have physical,
psychiatric, intellectual, learning or emotional
disabilities. NALSWD was formed to facilitate a sustained
community for law students with disabilities to seek support and
professional advice as they navigate law school and the legal
profession. In this vein, the former President of NALSWD is
now forming an affiliated Lawyers With Disabilities group,
thanks to a generous Hearne Leadership Grant from the American
Association of People With Disabilities ("AAPD").
Please visit the
website at www.nalswd.org to learn more about
NALSWD. At www.nalswd.org, students can learn
about opportunities to get involved with the organization, read
monthly newsletters, join the e-mail listserv, participate in the
burgeoning mentorship program, and learn about upcoming events and
career opportunities.
NALSWD's third annual
conference is scheduled to take place on August 7-9 in Washington
D.C. The conference is being held in conjunction with the
IMPACT Career Fair, the only national employer recruitment event for
law students with disabilities. NALSWD is also developing an
annual awards program for law schools and law firms that have shown
a commitment to advancing disability issues, access, and inclusion
in their institutions.
NALSWD invites
students to get involved right away by completing their online
registration form at http://www.nalswd.org/membershipform.php.

are judged blindly. Each essay is read and ranked by each of the
three academicians who comprise the panel of judges. After each

which papers have the highest ranking.
Benefits:
In
addition to the monetary prizes (see other side), the Independent
Institute assists with placing the winning essays for publication in
prominent journals, on websites and through other outlets. Winners
may also be invited to speak at the Institute’s seminar series or

The Equal Justice Works Debt Relief Online Resource
Center
Equal
Justice Works has launched a new web resource
for students and educators regarding student debt. The College Cost
Reduction and Access Act - legislation that forgives student debt
and limits monthly loan payments - becomes fully effective on July
1, 2009. Signed into law nearly two years ago, the College Cost
Reduction and Access Act ("CCRAA") will now help thousands of recent
graduates cope with student debt and enter public service.
To help
college graduates and their advisors understand, qualify and take
advantage of benefits under the CCRAA, Equal Justice Works has
developed a free online resource center that provides
a comprehensive overview of its provisions, as well as many
practical tools including simple checklists, calculators, lists of
loan repayment assistance programs, FAQs and podcasts.

One-Week
Institute on Child Welfare
INTERDISCIPLINARY CHILD WELFARE INSTITUTE

the legal and sociological principles central to child welfare
practice. In the increasingly complex world of child welfare,
quality collaboration among legal and social work professionals is
critical to keeping children safe and strengthening
families.
Interdisciplinary learning provides a common
foundation for students from different professional programs, and an
environment for developing the skills required of future child
welfare attorneys and social workers.
Capital University also
offers the Summer Adoption Law Institute, another two-credit,
one-week intensive course offered August 3 -7, 2009 that will
explore adoption and related child protection issues from both
academic and practitioner perspectives. http://www.law.capital.edu/adoption/sali.htm.

credit hour, for a total amount of $2,148.00 for this two-credit
course. There will not be a course fee for this course.

Constitutional rights of parents and children and the responsibility
of the State to protect children from maltreatment * History of

Reproductive Justice Writing Contest Hosted by the
National Advocates for Pregnant
Women
NAPW
Law Student Writing Competition 2008-2009 Academic School
Year
For all you law students out there, a fantastic
reproductive justice writing contest is being hosted by the National
Advocates for Pregnant Women ("NAPW"). They are giving out
significant cash prizes, $1,000 for first prize, $500 and $250 for
the runners up. The deadline for submissions
is May 31, 2009.
Issues of concern to pregnant and birthing women
have often been missing from discussion in law school courses and
among reproductive rights activists. Thanks in large part to public
education efforts by writers, filmmakers and community activists,
there is an unprecedented amount of attention and momentum
surrounding the rights of pregnant and birthing women. To advance
these efforts further, NAPW has developed two writing contests. NAPW
and numerous co-sponsors and supporters (to be announced) hope that
these contests will leverage the enthusiasm and creativity of a new
generation of feminist legal scholars, and spark critical thinking
about the need to address childbirth and birthing rights as
constitutional and human rights issues.
The first contest
asks for a critical analysis of the absence of birthing rights
issues from gender discrimination and feminist jurisprudence
textbooks and curricula. The second contest asks students to develop
legal theories that can be used to challenge policies banning
pregnant women from having a vaginal birth after a prior caesarean
section ("VBAC"). This topic will encourage students to address a
growing problem that has received very little attention from the
feminist legal community, both in academia and within the leading
women's rights legal advocacy organizations.
Other questions
about the contest? Send Inquiries to: writingcontest@advocatesforpregnantwomen.org.

with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state and
federal levels.
The
NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization

to July 25, 2009.
The
Job Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration and check-in;
interviews commence at 9:00 a.m. At the culmination of the Job
Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and

$50.00. After March 31st, the registration fee will
