UPCOMING PROGRAMS & EVENTS

Fall 2008 Recruiting Information

Fall recruiting involves a number of different opportunities including the Fall OCI, Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs, off campus job fairs, government honors programs and fellowship applications.  Despite the name, fall recruiting often begins in late spring so be sure to review the following information so that you do not miss any important deadlines.

A. On-Campus Interview Program ("OCI")

Every fall beginning in August, law firms, corporations and government agencies come on campus to interview 2L and 3L law students for summer associate positions and permanent placement after graduation, respectively.   In order to participate in OCI, you need to submit the necessary materials requested by each employer (i.e. resume, writing sample, transcript, etc.) by the specific deadline.  CPC advisors are available all summer, in person by email and phone, to discuss which employers you should target and to assist you in updating your resume in a timely manner.  All correspondence involving the Fall OCI program will be provided via email to the email address you have listed on Symplicity and many emails will be sent over the summer providing you with bidding instructions and deadline reminders.  Be sure to check your email regularly so that you do not miss any important information.

The Fall OCI program will take place in two phases.

Phase I Phase I of OCI is open exclusively to those employers who are members of NALP                (www.nalpdirectory.com).  Bidding for Phase I of OCI will take place from Tuesday, July 1 through Monday, July 14 via Symplicity.  Interviews for Phase I will take place from Monday, August 11 through Friday, August 15.  Please note that some of the employers participating in Phase I of OCI will host receptions for those students selected to interview.  These receptions generally take place at the firm the night before the firm’s interviews although some receptions may take place the week before.  These receptions are an important aspect of the interview process so please remember this while making your travel plans for the summer.

Phase II:  Phase II of OCI will include a wide variety of employers including large, mid-size and small firms, government agencies, public interest employers and corporations.  Bidding will take place in August with interviews taking place from Monday, September 8 through Friday, October 31.  The specific bidding dates will be provided to you over the summer.

In conjunction with the OCI program, the CPC also administers its Resume Referral and Direct Contact programs.  These programs feature employers who would like to receive applications from University of Miami School of Law students but are unable to come on campus.  More information about these programs will be available this summer.

B. 2008 Job Fairs

Each year the University of Miami School of Law participates in a number of job fairs throughout the country.  Several job fairs require pre-registration.  By pre-registering for a job fair, you are not bound to register or participate in the job fair.  Pre-registration only assures you of receiving information on how to register and participate in the job fair.

This is a reminder that the deadline to pre-register for certain job fairs is Friday, April 25 at 5:00 p.m. EST.  To pre-register, please fill out the 2008 Job Fair Pre-Registration Form located in the CPC (it was also e-mailed to you), and return it the CPC in person (room A112), or email it to Nirva Pierre-Louis at npierrelouis@law.miami.edu, .

The Florida Senate Internship Program

Description of the Program

The Florida Senate Internship Program offers a unique training opportunity in the areas of public policy and the legislative process to highly motivated, recent college graduates and graduate students, who wish to learn more about such areas.

The Program places 12 to 15 selected interns in one of a number of Senate standing committees comprised of Senators, who evaluate and debate legislation in areas within the committees’ jurisdiction. Each committee retains a staff director, one or more legislative analysts/attorneys, and an administrative assistant. Selected interns will perform professional work as committee analysts by preparing reports and bill analyses and will assist committee staff with substantive/policy research by conducting Internet research; conducting library research; contacting state agencies for documents or other items; and tracking legislation as it moves through the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Internships will begin on August 4th and end May 29th of the following year. Internships are available as OPS (no benefits) positions, allowing flexibility for school schedules. During the length of the internship, interns should be able to work at least 20 to 24 hours per week from August through December, and 32 to 40 hours per week from January through May.

Successful candidates will chose one of the following options:

• $16 per hour worked, or

• $11 per hour worked plus $6468 towards tuition, which may be used during the internship or for one year after the internship ends (requires a commitment to work at least 1100 total hours).

Compensation figures are subject to change. The Senate will provide a parking space and waive monthly parking fees for all interns.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for the Program must be Florida residents and have earned a Bachelor’s degree by the time the internship begins. In addition, the applicant must intend to pursue, be in the process of pursuing, or have recently completed a graduate program by the time the internship begins. Preference will be given to those applicants pursuing a graduate degree in a public Florida university.

In accordance with American Bar Association rules, schedules for first-year law students prohibit them from participating in the Internship Program. Immediate family members of Senators presently serving in the Senate are not eligible for the Program.

The most important qualities of any intern, regardless of academic or professional experience, are strong communication skills, intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm. Skills that are important for the internship are knowledge of the principles and techniques of basic research, analysis, and writing; and ability to handle confidential information.

Individual Committee Skill Requirements

Different standing committees have different requirements.

For example:

The Committee on Commerce seeks individuals with experience or interest in the areas of economic development, workforce, tourism, international trade and a wide variety of other business related subjects. Academic backgrounds well suited for this committee include: economics, economic development, finance, business, public administration and law.

The Committee on Agriculture seeks individuals with an academic background or practical experience in agriculture or a related area. Applicant must be seeking a masters degree or law degree with at least one year of school completed.

The Bill Drafting Office seeks a 2nd or 3rd year law student who has completed the 1st year of Legal Research and Writing course and who is interested in the legislative process. Since the office’s work involves a large amount of legal research, an intern candidate other than a law student would gain very little from the experience and would require a great deal of training. The successful applicant will have a strong background in writing, i.e., experience as a graduate teaching or research assistant, or undergraduate major in English or Creative Writing, or other experience providing evidence that the candidate writes well and enjoys writing.

The Committee on Transportation seeks an intern with an academic background or practical experience in transportation or a related area, who is seeking a masters degree or law degree and has completed one year of school.

The Committee on General Government Appropriations seeks an individual with an interest in the appropriations process, specifically in the areas of government administration, environment and agriculture. The intern should have experience with Excel. Interns with various academic backgrounds, from law to economics and from social work to history have been successful.

For additional information regarding all committees, please visit www.flsenate.gov.

Application Directions

Applicants must submit a completed Florida Legislative Employment Application, available at www.leg.state.fl.us, and the application addendum. Type or print legibly in black ink.

Applicants must also submit one copy of cumulative transcripts (photocopies may be submitted). If accepted into a graduate program, applicant must attach a copy of the acceptance letter or, if applicable, proof of current enrollment in a public Florida law school. In addition, if taken, the applicant must submit a copy of Law School Admission Test ("LSAT") score(s), Graduate Record Examination ("GRE") score(s) or Graduate Management Admission Test ("GMAT") score.

Applicants must also submit recommendations from two faculty members and one employer, if currently or previously employed, who are familiar with applicant’s academic and work experience and ability. Faculty/employers may attach an additional letter of recommendation to the appropriate forms, if desired. Completed recommendations must be received no later than 5:00 P.M. on May 16, 2008.

Applicants must submit two writing samples as follows:

1. One writing sample of your choice; and

2. A one to two page writing sample detailing the following:

a. Your views of the Florida Senate;

b. Your reasons for applying to the Florida Senate Internship Program; and

    c. Your expectations of the Program, including a description of the benefits you intend to receive and how those benefits

will contribute to your personal and career goals.

The writing samples must be written by the applicant and must not be edited by any other person. The writing samples must also be typed or handwritten in black ink.

GOVERNMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Attorney General's Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program

                                                                            NEW FOR 2008-2009!

There are exciting new developments in the Attorney General’s Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program!

Highlights include:

An earlier application deadline and a faster review and selection process.
- Don’t miss the September 2, 2008 application deadline.
- Candidates selected for Honors Program ("HP") interviews will be notified on or about September 19, 2008. Summer Law Intern Program ("SLIP") candidates will be notified on or about September 23, 2008.
- Government-funded HP interviews will be scheduled October 6-20, 2008. SLIP interviews, mostly telephonic, will begin following notification.
- Most offers will be issued by late October.

Four United States Attorneys’ Offices ("USAO"s) and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys ("EOUSA") are formal HP participants this year, hiring approximately 16 entry-level attorneys. Applicants interested in becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney ("AUSA") will be able to designate the “U.S. Attorney’s Office” as one of their employment preferences, then, later in the application, select the specific offices. Due to the level of responsibility held by AUSAs, these opportunities are only available to applicants who are admitted to a bar or, in some cases, who have taken a summer 2008 bar examination with results due in fall 2008. Current law students (pre-J.D.) are not eligible. Participating USAOs are:

- The Central District of California, Los Angeles, CA.
- The Southern District of California, San Diego, CA.
- The Western District of Michigan, Grand Rapids, MI.
- The Middle District of Florida, Orlando, FL.
- EOUSA, Washington, D.C., with possible assignments nationwide.

The USAO for the District of Wyoming is the very first USAO to become a formal SLIP participant and it is offering a position in one of the Nation’s most scenic national parks. Hiring for Cheyenne, WY, or Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, the Summer Intern will assist with criminal and civil cases in U.S. District Court in Cheyenne or will assist in the prosecution of a range of misdemeanors in Yellowstone National Park.

Civil Division applicants will be able to designate specific sections of interest.

Executive Office of Immigration Review applicants will be able to designate geographic areas of preference by city and state, and comment on any geographic restrictions on their assignment.

The Honors Program application has been expanded to permit applicants serving in post-J.D. legal fellowships to apply online on a conditional basis. OARM will determine whether an exception to policy will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT www.usdoj.gov/oarm FOR DETAILS!

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair ("RMDLCF"), which will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008, in Denver, Colorado, provides an excellent forum for legal employers, law students and recent law school graduates to meet and discuss employment options. Legal employers attending the RMDLCF seek to hire law students and recent graduates from culturally diverse backgrounds who have been traditionally under-represented in the practice of law in the Rocky Mountain region. These include law students and graduates who are ethnic or racial minorities, disabled, and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Online registration will be available on the RMDLCF's website from May 1 to July 28, 2008. Please visit www.rmdlcf.com for more information on the Career Fair.
