Sarasota County Bar Association/Richard Garland Diversity Scholarship Program
The Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship Fund is intended to provide an internship opportunity for first through third-year law students of underrepresented minority backgrounds (e.g. race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability or socioeconomic background), who have an interest in practicing law in Sarasota County upon graduation to obtain summer placement in private law firms and governmental agencies in Sarasota County. The Scholarship Application is open to those aforementioned law students enrolled in Florida law schools and those enrolled in out-of-state law schools, but who have or had family, school or community ties to Sarasota County, are interested in practicing law in Sarasota County. The Diversity Scholarship aims to foster an employment and collegial relationship between the law student/s and the legal employer/s and consequently enhance the diversity of the Sarasota legal community. At the conclusion of his or her summer employment, the law school where the student matriculates will receive scholarship funds of up to $5,000.00 per student, to be used by the student for his/her law degree. The Diversity Intern also earns wages from the Employer. The SCBA Diversity Committee assigns an attorney mentor to each Diversity Scholarship Intern. Along with the Internship Employer, the SCBA mentor coordinates the activities promoting the professional development of the Diversity Scholarship Intern during the internship period. The Diversity Scholarship Intern and the Diversity Scholarship Employer will be welcomed and recognized, respectively, at a reception by the SCBA and representatives from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Information regarding housing alternatives may be obtained from the SCBA Diversity. Becoming a Florida Bar Certified Legal Intern (CLI) may increase your employability among a greater number of potential employers. Obtaining your CLI designation is strictly voluntary and is not a requirement to qualify for the Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship. However, becoming a CLI will enable you to accept employment with a wider variety of potential employers, particularly government employers such as the State Attorney Offices and the Public Defender Offices, which typically require their applicants to be CLIs. Due to the time it may take for the Florida Bar to review and process CLI applications, it is recommended that you start this process as soon as possible if you wish to become a CLI. Save The Date! The Palm Beach County Bar Association Committee for Diversity & Inclusion Presents The Law Student Forum & Networking Event
This event is offered free to all law students to attend and gives the students a one-on-one with local attorneys in different practice areas, as well as several local judges. This is a great opportunity for the students to ask questions about areas of the law that they may be interested in from a practical perspective. The event takes place on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the The Palm Beach County Convention Center, 650 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Again, the cost is free. In order to attend,each student must register and can do so by logging on to the Palm Beach County Bar Association website.

2014 Law Student Diversity Scholarship Application: Submission Deadline: March 31, 2014
DRI announces its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program, open to rising 2014 or 2015 second- and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. All rising second- and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Any other rising second- and third-year law students who come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender, are eligible to apply. Students who are members of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), law school or law student members of AAJ, or students otherwise affiliated with or employed by AAJ are not eligible for DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarships. To qualify for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time student. Evening students also qualify for consideration if they have completed one third or more of the total credit hours required for a degree by the law school of the applicant. The goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law students from ABA-accredited law schools to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI Diversity Statement of Principle. Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best meet the required criteria. Applications and all other requested materials must be received by March 31, 2014. Scholarship winners will be notified in advance and officially announced at the DRI Diversity for Success Seminar scheduled for June 12th and 13th, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. Call for Applications: Zelle Hofmann 2014 Diversity Scholarship
The keystone of the firm Diversity Outreach Plan, the Diversity in Law Scholarship was created for law students who either: (1) are a member of a population or group whose background and perspectives are historically underrepresented in the private practice of law; or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship. The scholarship awards the selected recipient a total of $30,000 to be applied towards law school tuition, fees and textbooks, with one half of the scholarship paid for the second year of law school and one half of the scholarship paid for the third year of law school subject to the following. To receive the second installment of the scholarship, the recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or its equivalent) through the second year of law school. Depending upon the current needs of the firm, the Scholarship recipient may be offered, but is under no obligation to accept, a paid summer clerkship at one of the firm offices for the summer following the first year of law school. The specific location of the potential clerkship will be decided by the firm, in consultation with the student, and will be based upon both the student interest and the firm need. Finally, in order to help ensure the recipient a successful entry into the legal profession, the firm will assign an attorney to mentor the recipient for the remaining law school career of the student. Wednesday, March 5:
Career Development Office Sixteenth Annual Informational Career Fair
Attorneys from firms, government agencies, public interest organizations and corporations visit campus to speak with students about their legal careers. During the event, students have the opportunity to ask the attorneys questions about their career choices, areas of practice and the general life of a practicing attorney. This is a great opportunity for students to get a feel for what it is like to practice law in different practice areas and with different types of employers. The event takes place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Bricks. For any details, please contact Debbie Rowe-Millwood in the CDO.

Wednesday, March 5:
Attend Breakfast With Barristers
Breakfast with Barristers UNetworking is a series of breakfast and dinner events coordinated by the SBA and the Post-Graduate Student Service Fellows. The Breakfast on March 5th will be a networking event focusing on work in the judiciary and and it will feature a roundtable format with 6 tables, each with 1 judge and 5-7 students. Each table will be assigned a student facilitator, who will have a list of topics for discussion. Midway through the breakfast, the judges will be asked to rotate to a different table to allow the students to interact with another judge. This event takes place from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. in the Faculty Meeting Room. It is open to all students.

  Monday, March 31:
The ABA John J. Curtin, Jr. Justice Fund 2014 Summer Legal Internship Program
The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is seeking motivated law student interns to apply for stipends available for the Summer 2014. These students should have a position offered, contingent on funding, from a qualified organization. The Program will pay a $2,500 stipend to three law school students who spend the summer months working for a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients. The program will give students direct experience in a public interest forum. It aims both to help homeless clients and to encourage careers in the law that further the goals of social justice. The ideal intern will have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and experience working with poor people or on issues affecting them. All law students are eligible, and first-year law students are encouraged to apply. The intern must commit no less than eight continuous weeks between May 1 and October 1 to the program of his or her choice. For more information, visit the website.

Loyola Offers The Salisbury Clinical Fellowship in Child and Family Law
Loyola University Chicago School of Law is seeking applications for the Salisbury Clinical Fellowship in Child and Family Law. The Loyola ChildLaw program is offering this two-year Fellowship, to commence in July of 2014. The Fellowship will provide a unique opportunity for a recent law school graduate to gain experience in both clinical law teaching and litigation in the field of child law. The Clinical Fellow will work closely with the ChildLaw Clinic Faculty, assisting in the representation of clients, the supervision of students, and the development of course curriculum. The Salisbury Fellow will share responsibility with the Clinic Director and Associate Director for the ChildLaw Clinic. The Clinic affords representation to child clients, primarily in the areas of child protection and child custody. The Fellow will assist with the supervision of law students in their representation of clinic clients. The Fellow will be expected to assist with all levels of client representation, including pre-trial, trial and appellate proceedings. The Fellow will also participate in the development of the course curriculum and the teaching of a weekly seminar, focused on ethical and substantive issues arising in the representation of child clients, skills training and the discussion of current clinic cases.

Loyola Offers A Two-Year Clinical Teaching Fellowship in Childlaw Legislation and Policy
Loyola University Chicago School of Law invites applications for the post-graduate ChildLaw Legislation and Policy Clinical Teaching Fellowship. This is a non-tenure track faculty position and will commence July 1, 2014. Under the direction of the director of the ChildLaw Policy Institute, the Fellowship provides an opportunity for a recent law school graduate to gain experience in the area of clinical law teaching specific to policy and legislative reform. The Clinical Fellow will work closely with the Policy Institute Director, participating in the Institute policy initiatives. The Policy Institute works on a broad range of projects related to children, including child protection, juvenile justice, domestic violence and children health through policy reform, legislative advocacy, research and training. The Fellow also will participate in the development of course curriculum for the ChildLaw Legislation and Policy Clinic and may have the opportunity to participate in teaching and supervision of students involved in other childlaw classes. The Fellow will be encouraged to develop independent areas of interest, consistent with the mission of the ChildLaw Policy Institute.

Paz Horowitz is proud to be the Ecuadorian sponsor of the American Bar Association International Summer Internship Program. Paz Horowitz Robalino Garces is widely regarded as one of the leading full-service law firms in Ecuador. Founded in 1991, the firm has various practice areas such as Anti-Corruption Compliance, Antitrust, Banking & Finance, Civil Aviation, Corporate, Environmental Law, etc. The purpose of the program is to provide foreign law students with an opportunity to acquire practical experience and learn about the practice of law in Latin America. Interns work closely with the firm lawyers and Ecuadorian law clerks to gain an understanding of the laws and legal system in Ecuador. Interns support firm attorneys in assigned cases and are expected to draft documents, carry out legal research, prepare correspondence and write legal memoranda and articles. Interns are also required to get on-the-job training carrying out various legal procedures and formalities at different public offices.
