January 2006

Jared Washkowitz recently joined Emard, Port, Danoff & Tamulski, a maritime firm in San Francisco. Prior to the move, Jared had been practicing maritime law with Sands Lerner in Los Angeles. Since graduating from law school, Jared has accumulated six years of experience in the areas of maritime personal injury, insurance defense, maritime products liability, maritime property damage, and cargo claims.

Leading maritime experts such as Bernard Oxman and Hugo Caminos combined with the school's location make the University of Miami one of the premier law schools in the country for maritime law. But for Jared, maritime practice was not something he had considered until he was a student at UM. "I've always loved the ocean, but never thought it could carry over into the practice of law. I just happened to become friends with some guys who were in the Maritime Law Society and that's how it all got started for me."

Jared joined the Maritime Law Society and he clerked for a local maritime firm during law school. He also served as the vice president of the Environmental Law Society. Because he participated in the London Summer Abroad program and he received credit for a clinical placement with a Legal Aid office in Colorado during his second summer, Jared graduated a semester early. After law school, he stayed in Miami and worked for a couple of maritime firms before relocating to Los Angeles in 2002.

Jared was born in San Antonio and grew up in Boston. He studied philosophy at Rollins College in Orlando and after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1997, Jared enrolled at UM Law. He has been admitted to the state bars in Florida, California, and Hawaii. Jared is married to his Jamaican-Chinese wife and they have a four year old son. He participated in his first triathlon this year and in the fall Jared went to Mexico to compete in a fifty-mile bike race.
