Scott Carter, JD’99: Sr. VP/In-house Counsel, Franklin Street Properties Corp.
July 2006
UM Alumnus Scott Carter, (JD‘99/BBA ‘95) is working as Sr. VP/In-house Counsel at Franklin Street Properties Corp. ("FSP") in Wakefield, Massachusetts. FSP is a publicly traded real estate investment trust (AMEX: FSP). Scott joined FSP in October of 2005 and is responsible for all of FSP’s legal matters and manages FSP’s relationships with outside counsel.
Scott describes his practice at FSP as “extremely diverse” with a particular focus on corporate, securities and real estate law. “I work with a wonderful group of extremely bright professionals who are dedicated to the long-term growth of FSP. When you combine that with a challenging and diverse practice, you have a truly unique legal job opportunity.”
Prior to joining FSP, Scott worked as an Associate in the Boston office of Nixon Peabody LLP. “At Nixon Peabody LLP, my practice primarily involved the structuring of transactions designed to utilize low-income housing tax credits. It was a very specialized practice that provided me with an excellent background in transactional law.”
Scott graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami in May 1995. Scott double majored in Finance and Marketing and minored in English. During his undergrad years at UM, Scott was a Student Government Senator, Treasurer of the Rathskeller Advisory Board, a member of the Homecoming Executive Committee and Vice Chairman of the Student Health Advisory Committee. He was also a member and officer of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Further, Scott had the honor of being tapped into both the Order of Omega and the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Societies.
Scott continued to be involved during his years in law school. Scott served as Research and Writing Editor for the University of Miami Entertainment & Sports Law Review. He also earned Dean’s List, was awarded the Dean’s Certificate of Achievement in Administrative Law (in Professor Froomkin’s class), was named in Who’s Who Among American Law Students, graduated cum laude, was a member of Phi Delta Phi, completed the Litigation Skills Clinical Program and was hired as a paid law clerk by the United States Department of Justice, Immigration & Naturalization Service.
Scott believes that his UM law school education and his Nixon Peabody LLP work experience have prepared him well for his job at FSP. “In my current position, I have found that it is not critical (or even feasible) for me to be an expert in every area of law that impacts FSP. What is critical is for me to be able to quickly and accurately deliver sound legal advice in every area of law that impacts FSP. That requires strong listening, research and writing skills.” The rigorous UM Law School academic training, excellent teaching, diverse course offerings and emphasis on legal research and writing have enabled Scott to “make the transition from a highly specialized practice in a law firm setting to a highly diverse practice in a corporate law department setting.”
Scott enjoyed UM law classes particularly: Property with Professor Doyle, Civil Procedure II with Professor Alfieri, Administrative Law with Professor Froomkin and the Litigation Skills Clinical Program.
Scott now lives in South Hamilton, Massachusetts with his wife, Cristie (UM grad ‘95 and Former Assistant Dean of Students at UM), his 4-year old daughter, Sophia, and his 2-year old daughter, Emma. Scott and Cristie are expecting a new addition to the family in January 2007. Scott’s parents and both of Cristie’s sisters attended UM. The ‘Cane tradition is definitely strong in the Carter household.
