Reince Priebus, JD'98: UM Degree Sets Him Apart
November 2003
Reince Priebus is currently a member of the Corporate Litigation Practice Area
of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since joining the
firm in 1998, he has successfully litigated or participated in over 250 matters
pending before circuit, appellate, and federal courts, representing privately
and publicly held businesses, financial institutions, and governmental and quasi-governmental
entities.
Active in state politics, Reince was appointed by the Governor to the Judicial Selection Committee and he is the Republican Party's Chair of the First Congressional District of Wisconsin.
In addition to reputation and placement record, Reince chose Miami because he wanted the opportunity to experience living in a diverse community. Reince excelled at UM Law where he was an editor for the School of Law's newspaper, a member of the Miami Business Law Review, and the president of the Student Bar Association. He graduated with honors in 1998.
Reince performed three judicial internships during law school and he found these opportunities to be outstanding preparation for his current work in corporate litigation. His judicial internships were with the U.S. District Court in Miami, the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. He was also a law clerk for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in Los Angeles the summer before his third year.
While leaving Miami was a difficult decision for him, he discovered that his degree from UM helped to distinguish him from other attorneys in Wisconsin. "There is a value to being different in the legal market. When I was searching for a job in Wisconsin, having Miami on my resume was definitely advantageous."
Reince was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, in political science and English from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he was president of the student body. Before entering law school, Reince worked for the Wisconsin State Legislature for a year.
Reince married his high school girlfriend in 1999. He enjoys politics and fishing, and is an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
