February 2006

In April 2005, after nearly seven years in Washington, D.C. as an associate with the global law firm of Baker & McKenzie, Marni Rosenblatt joined Merck & Co., Inc., the pharmaceutical company, where she serves as International Tax Counsel & Director of Tax Planning. "I did exactly what I set out to accomplish when I came to Miami to pursue my law degree. My goal was to practice international corporate tax at a large law firm and then either become a partner there or serve as in-house legal counsel for a U.S. multinational corporation. I would not be where I am today without the University of Miami School of Law."

Marni, who is also a CPA, graduated from SUNY at Albany in 1991 with a bachelor's in accounting and worked for four years as a tax specialist with the public accounting firm of Goldstein Golub Kessler & Co. in New York before moving to Miami to pursue her law degree.

As a law student, Marni turned out to be a law school's dream. She was the founding editor-in-chief of the University of Miami Tax Law Chronicle, the founding vice-president of the Tax Law Society, and she graduated cum laude. "I chose Miami because I wanted to study tax law. It was great to be in an encouraging environment where I could develop new student organizations in line with my interests. Because of the school's superb tax department, it was easy to attract guest speakers to discuss tax law and the student membership followed from that. I understand that by the time I left Miami, the Tax Law Society was the second largest student organization at the School of Law."

During her three years at Miami, Marni also served as president of the Tax Law Society, was a research assistant for Professors Edwin Cohen and William Blatt, and was active in the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, International Moot Court Board, the Iron Arrow Honor Society, and Equity Playhouse (the law school's theatre group) among other groups. After completing her first year of law school, Marni participated in the Asia-America Institute in Transnational Law in Hong Kong through Duke University's School of Law and during her second summer, she was a summer associate with Baker & McKenzie in Washington, D.C. "I loved Equity Playhouse because it was a great nothing-to-do-with-serious-law stress reliever. My experience in it inspired me to form a rock band when I moved to D.C. after law school. Miami Law Women was another organization that I was involved in and it became an invaluable experience once I started working because it prepared me for much of what I would face as a female attorney."

After graduating from Miami Law in 1998, Marni joined Baker & McKenzie as an associate in Washington where she was responsible for international corporate tax planning. "I got my job through the assistance of the law school's alumni network and after I arrived at Baker & McKenzie, I've made it a point to stay in touch with Miami Law's Career Planning Center, to periodically speak with law students interested in tax law, and to actively recruit Miami Law students to work for Baker & McKenzie. My good friend and fellow UM Law alum, Scott A. Knott, JD'99, remains at B&M in Washington and has assumed my UM Law recruiting duties."

Today, Marni is an active member of the tax sections of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. She has presented at national conferences and published several articles on international tax law. In 2001 she received her Master of Laws in Taxation with distinction from Georgetown University.

In the hobby department, Marni is an avid international traveler and golfer. She recently returned from a safari in South Africa and on her days off she vigorously pursues her golf game, boasting to have already lengthened her drive substantially since making the move from the big law firm environment to the business sector.
